Curious how long others practice each day during the season?
Our typical week: Mon - 90 minutes at most (split between o and d, 9th and JV play Monday nights) Tues - 3 hrs (60 min offense, 60 defense, 30 special, another 30 for warm-up/conditioning and built in water breaks) Wed - 3 hrs (same as Tues) Thur - 60 to 90 minutes
We have a split staff so while varsity offense is practicing the defensive coaches are coaching the freshman D and then we switch.
Thanks.

Two hours each day, although Thursdays are typically shorter. Mondays are two hours but we don't spend all that time on the field.

We have been doing 3 hours on Tuesday and Wednesday for a long time now and that doesn't include meeting time for film pre-practice. It feels like we are going too long and could be more efficient but I really don't have anything to compare us to.
How do you divide your practices time when going 2 hours (O, D, S)?

I agree with you that 3 hours is a long time for Tues and Wed especially if it doesn't include film, meetings, etc. Remember, these kids just sat in school for 7+ hours. Do your kids get burnt out midway through the season? Obviously going only 2 hours you have some constraints but here is how we've done it in the past. Monday - 45 min film, 15 min Team Sled Push, 30 -45 min O and D Walkthrough Tuesday - 10 Warm Up, 10 Off Install, 15 Specials, 20 O Indy, 10/15 Inside Run, 10/15 7 on 7, 20 Offensive Team, 15 Sudden Change Wednesday - 10 Warm Up, 15 Specials, 15 D Indy, 10/15 Inside Run, 10/15 7 on 7, 25 Defensive Team, 15 Sudden Change, 10 Goal Line Thursday - Game Warmup, Coin Toss, KO/KOR, Off/Def, Punt/Punt Ret, repeat, repeat, 2 min drill, Victory formation We will mix it up a bit from week to week by adding tackling turnover circuits, our War Drill, Escape from Baghdad, and in some cases go full go (especially on Monday's after a poor performance).

ST is usually 15-20 minutes, and the rest is split between O and D. Others might disagree, but I think three hours is too much.

We go 3 hours on Mondays and Tuesday. This includes film for 30 - 45 minutes. Wednesday is our grind day. We go for 3 and split between O/D. Thursday is our pregame practice for 2 - 2.5 hours. Saturday is 2 hours for stretch and film. Total is 13 - 13.5 hours. Last year we scaled it back to 2.5 hours M-W because our team was full of players who were experienced and caught on quickly to the scheme. In years past it hasn't always been that way.

In season 2 hrs Monday through Wednesday, short on Thursday for a game simulation run through. Monday is split in half, 75% of Tuesday is Defense, 75% of Wednesday is Offense,

Every study I've ever seen has said that an athletic practice should not exceed 2:30 because of "diminishing returns," increased chance of injury, and overall inefficiency because kids will "pace" themselves throughout.
Heck I was tired after 2 1/2 hours as a coach.

We went 2hr. 15min. at the most. Most days 90 min. The kids liked it as they were more fresh from day to day.
The initial difficulty that I faced was getting the coaches to coach faster. The first couple of weeks, when the whistle blew to change periods, they would look up and sometimes give me a 'WTF' look. I would tell them in meetings to coach more efficiently. They adjusted over time.
I would try to help them by giving them time updates so they knew how to pace the segment. I'm always calling out "5 minutes!" and "1 minute!" updates so they know to get those last few reps in and not be shocked when the time is up.

I coach a JV team in Michigan. We platoon for the most part, but still divide our practices into offensive and defensive sessions because we only have four coaches. We make sure to work defensive and offensive skills in all drills though.
We go 2 hours on Monday/Tuesday. About an hour and a half on Wednesday because of team dinner. Game day is Thursday.
On Friday we do an hour of film, and then about 30 minutes of conditioning or light running depending on how many players are nursing ouchies.

How do you feel about going offense and defense only once per week?
Tuesday is our Offensive emphasis day and Wednesday is our Defensive emphasis day. We do team for both offense and defense on both days, the emphasis for indy, inside, and 7 on 7 are different. Also, Monday we install and on Thursday we can refine any issues during our runthrough (which is walkthrough). Do I like it.... It's not ideal no but when working with High School kids nothing is. We found that sometimes less is more. Most schools around us are just starting camp and we finished today. Kids get 3 weeks off from all sports so when they come back in August they actually miss practice and even the coaches. Every program is different, this is just what works for us.

We never go over two hours and that includes Film and Weight Room Monday. Film happens during Lunch and PE period. Weight room consumes 30 minutes after Monday warm up. The remaining time for Monday's practice is on field for upcoming game plan briefing, then some INDY. Tuesday is team offense Vs. Scout D. Wednesday is Team Defense Vs. Scout O. Thursday is ST only. I'm a total P_ ick when it comes to ST...we WILL be the best. When Scout D is on the field with 1st O, the 1st defense is alone with the DC. When Scout O is on the field with 1st D, the 1st O is with the OC. On Thursday the STC has them for the whole practice. We will never be out special teamed...in any phase. My personal philosophy is that the name of the game is football...which means that at some point in time the ball and someone's foot make contact. Then...the ball bounces funny. IMO, having a specific practice schedule that doesn't exceed 2 hours is the way to go. Again JMHO. We very, very seldom, use ANY part of practice to delve out punishments.

2 hrs and 15 min max on any given day. By the last 1/3 of the season, it's usually an hour and 45 mins. We do not platoon.
Mon: Film, weights, install game plan, conditioning/circuit work Tue: Defense with 10-15 min offense Wed: Offense with 10-15 min defense Thurs: 1 HR 20 min max run through Fri: Pay day No practice Sat or Sun
In the last half of the season, we will give them Wed off this year if we have a Saturday afternoon game. Fresh legs and minds for the stretch.
Less is more. I truly believe this now.

We are lucky enough to have all of our varsity football players in weight training during the last period of the day so that plays into our schedule.
Weight training period starts at 2:00 and we lift for 20 minutes 2:20 - Position meetings and film 2:40 - Dress 2:55 - QBs and Centers on field working snaps 3:00 - Stretch for 5 minutes
We will practice for approximately 2 hours & off the field around 5 pm. On the offensive side of the ball our practice schedule typically follows a standard routine of Indy time for inside run, buddy drills with defense, indy time for perimeter runs, team run, indy time for pass, buddy drills with defense & 7on7, & finish with team pass.
That is Monday through Wednesday and as the season goes on we streamline the process to rest our players' legs a little. Thursday is walk through and team meeting with a guest speaker.

3 hours is WAAAAY too much IMO. College and pro teams don't do that and thats their occupation and livelihood.
Diminishing returns hits hard. Practice slows down, tempo and energy suffers. And now your kids have less time to do homework and whatnot. Also it puts a burden and wears down families (coaches and players).
I like this type of schedule: Mon: Film/Lift for 90 mins, field for 30 Tues: 120 Weds: 120 Thurs: 90

3 hours is WAAAAY too much IMO. College and pro teams don't do that and thats their occupation and livelihood. True but they don't need as much time. They already understand the basics of the game. In the case of the pros, they may not spend nearly as much time on the field but they do spend all day at the facility working out, meeting, and watching film.

Depends on the week and the opponent.

UK University team so we're somewhat restricted by facility availability and personal commitments from staff and players:
Sunday - 2.5 Hours (or Game) Wednesday - 2 Hours Film - Usually 1-2 hours per week as a team, players have access to HUDL and team Facebook groups/chats for independent study. Gym - Players are responsible for own physical development under the guidance of a Stength & Conditioning Coach.

We are on the field for 2hours max. We are a no huddle team, fast paced team. We simulate practice the same way (conditions players too). We have 5 sessions: individual time, inside/outside run/pass pro, 7v7, screen game, special teams. We weight each session with 5 100s, if we move fast and do everything at full speed and with their best effort. After each session we meet while kids get water and discuss the session, thumbs by all coaches means those 5 100s are wiped. One thumbs down means they have to do those 100safter practice. This shot production up drastically, especially since we are a small school and had some kids realize they could potentially start without trying very hard in practice. Just a thought.

Are you guys including film lifting/conditioning in your time?
During season we meet at lunch. Monday we go over the O gameplan, Tuesday we go over the D gameplan, wednesday we watch the opponents last game, pausing and quizzing the kids as we go. Thursday, we don't meet at lunch but the kids still come around anyway. Friday, the same.
Monday we lift/condition during our athletic period and then have our offensive practice as well as kickoff and kickoff return for 2 hours.
Tuesday we practice defense as well as punt and punt return for 2 hours.
Wednesday we practice offense for 50 minutes, defense for 50 minutes, and fg/fb block for 20 minutes.
If you include our meeting and lifting time, then we go over 3 hours. However, it's my belief that our actual practice time is sped up immensely because of our lunch meetings and the fact that we get our conditioning done during athletic period. Lunch meetings are also good because it keeps the kids from getting in trouble.

For us this is always a work in progress. Have heard some that go 3h and some much less and seen both be successful.
For us we are generally at 2h35m.
Monday Warm up - 10 Offense 1h Defense 1h Film 25M
Tuesday warm up 10 Offense 75 M Punt 15 Defense 45M (15 Indy 30 team)
Wednesday is the reverse of Tuesday w/ larger time slot geared towards defense & PR
Thursday Walk through & the rest of ST's.
Friday as lochness said is pay day. Not Saturdays or Sundays for about 10 years now.

I think it depends on squad size too.
When I coached at school with enrollment 1700+ and had 40-50 kids on Varsity, we needed 2:30 to ensure our back-ups got some reps.
At school of 400+ with 20-25 players we cut that back to no more than 2:15.
Last year we had a squad of 30+ and had to get off field after two hours so Soccer could use it. Wasn't enough time for me.
