We just finished up springs. I think for the most part we are moving in a pretty positive direction. I think we have a few issues to address as a program. Our head coach has given our OC and myself quite a bit of say in the program and we are trying to prioritize the needs/wants in the program. The discussions I want to have include:
A. How do we get to a two-platooned system? We have over 90 players in our program and only about 20 of them see significant playing time on varsity and a similar number on JV.
B. Weight room updates. I do not run the strength program but I do feel it is a top priority in building a program. Currently we are battling with boosters over replacing broken safety bars on the squat racks and benches that the part kids lay on literally fall off if they don't lay perfectly center.
C. Getting an Endzone camera and hudl sidline--purely on the wishlist but would love to have them.
What discussions do other staffs have during the offseason? If your HC allowed you to bring up issues what issues would you emphasize?

I would love to have a heart to heart conversation with all of those on our staff. I would be brutally honest with them and I would expect the same in return.
My biggest issue isn't about the kids, the school or equipment. It's about the fact that there's coaches on staff who skate by without doing a damn thing. And it's just brushed under the table like it's nothing. Why on earth are you a paid coach if you can't dedicate time to doing the stuff it takes to be a coach. Very frustrating when you have zero time in the off-season for ANYTHING, but come football season you don't miss a Saturday of tailgating after being up late with games on Friday nights.
Sorry, I can't rant anywhere else...

Two-Platoon - Our staff is divided between offense & defense, not jv/varsity. The idea is that by coaching a single position the coach gets really good at coaching that position. Which we have seen. It also keeps the message the same at all levels. Going 2 platoon means your staff needs to be divided this way as well. I've always had it in my mind that when we reach 45 players on a level that we could platoon - 2 deep at each position plus 3 kicker types. And my take is that the only way to do it is to do it. My plan would be to an honest evaluation of the talent, ask the players if there are any strong O/D desires, and then do a draft. Several varieties of drafts are out there, choose one and go.
Weight room/boosters - If you've got 90 players in the program you should be fundraising separately from the boosters. Fundraising here is part of the commitment to the team. Yeah, the money is nice, but I also want the players to have to do things that make them uncomfortable, getting out and meeting people, selling cards, working projects, whatever. Plus the funds would let you get what you need in the weight room without 'bothering' the boosters. Get them to do the EZ system and Hudl. Unless you have a general athletic boosters group that supports everyone, they should exist to support football and acquire what the team needs. As long as there is $$ to do so.

coachpech - just take over. Do more than anyone with a purpose. I feel like I've done the most (outside of the HC) in all my years here. Get filmers, set up cameras, dump footage, load to Hudl (and other software over the years), watch film, breakdown opponents, make game plan (I'm the DC), coach my position, coach all defensive positions, etc. etc. etc.
My point is...when some hotshot wants to come in and take over some of my duties....HAVE AT IT. I'll be glad to give up a lot of things I'm doing. Until then...{censored} has to get done...and it has to be me doing it.
We can talk as a staff about it, but in the end...I know what guys are hat and polo guys and I know which guys actually coach...and get into the grimy spots.

I'm very happy to say that's exactly what I'm doing. The program had won 1 game a year for the previous 10 years, last year in my first season we won 2. Now I'm not taking any credit for that but it gave the kids some motivation to look towards this year. From a coaching standpoint, there's a clear reason why the program sucks so bad. There's zero expectations from AD to HC, and from HC to staff. I have more free time then the rest of the staff but this gentlemen to do absolutely nothing is very bothersome. And because of his seniority with the program, he gets top choice of what time he coaches. So of course he picks 9th grade so he doesn't have to travel for JV games. Lazy (#$($%. I simply do EVERYTHING because honestly, it simply would not get done otherwise. The other coaches are helpful but don't always follow through on what they say at our meetings. It's one giant frustrating mess and I can't go to the AD to bitc h about it because he's best friends with these two gentlemen. Very happy to see your response though, I was expecting people to say sit down and shut up.

Actually...I'd keep doing what you're doing...to NOT stay there. Build up a resume...and run from that place...fast. Learn how NOT to do it...and take that with you when you find a place where people actually give a rip.

with 90 players you should be able to get close to 2 platoon, esp on sp teams, if the safety bars are bad get them out of there, put it on a list and see if the boosters will replace one or two a year. have the players do a fundraiser or two, heck if each brought in 20 bucks you would have a nice chunk of change, if you can get the asst coaches to do one thing then that would take the load off, ask them what they like, make sure you work with the hfc and get his blessings, don't want it to look like your going behind his back, those things will up the quality of your team, weight room priority, kids buy in to everything priority, then it will get better,
