Today we collected equipment. For the last 10 years we have played at least another week so we are not used to this. It really does not matter when you turn in the pads, it sucks.
Does anyone do a security deposit type thing to ensure equipment gets turned in on time? Make the parents write out a check at the start of football for maybe $50? I know that is a fraction of the total cost of the gear but it might be enough to get the message across. Maybe even make it $100. Of course like any security deposit they get it back when everything is accounted for.

I have to say....with all the headaches we've had with getting the little things collected...this is a brilliant idea.
Before, we would have it applied to their student account.

Pretty much the same here Brophy. We just put them on the hold list. They can't get there report card (promoted, or transcript) until lost equipment is paid for.

We're a private school and we do the same thing. Also don't allow them to turn out/practice with the next sport until their account is clear.

All 60 uniforms. By 3 oclock the next day the helmets and shoulder pads were sent out for reconditioning. The uniforms are in trash bags in a closet at the moment...

Never had security deposits here but would have a big cookout (mostly deer meat) for the players and parents on uniform turn in day! We also gave all the players a little participation "award". The coaches did all the cooking and serving and it was a great way to meet the parents, reward the players and most importantly, get all the equipment back. los

we just put a hold on report cards. It is amazing how much stuff these kids forget, even when you give them a checklist.
I also find it amazing that a kid will lose his helmet or shoulder pads, when he wore them all year long.
We usually make a lot of money during equipment return.

Money would work.....
However, IMO, it is more important to get the equipment back. I don't want any equipment floating around the community or at parties.
Calende's idea of collecting it right after the last game is a good one. You have to do the laundry, but you are guaranteed to get everything right then.
Kids "losing" helmets and jerseys is just a way to keep them regardless of the cost to junior or his parents.....
