For those of you scoring your practices to keep things competitive, how do you assign point values to the O and D?
Do you reward winners, or are bragging rights enough? Just thinking about some things going forward.

We do a 15 play drill. Starts with the offense on the 50 going in. The offense has 5 gassers assigned to them. They only have 15 total plays. Each time they score, 1 of their gassers goes to the scout D and the ball is taken back to the 50. So, if the offense needs 8 plays to score the first time, they only have 7 left to remove the four remaining gassers. We let the Scout D do whatever they want (pressures, blitz, etc). It's a great drill for competition. Basically, I say "Boys, we're running 5 gassers when this is over. What I don't know yet, is who is running them."

We don't punish the scout team, because they are the scout team. Might be an incentive....
When we go team good vs good, we try to have an objective. Yesterday at the end of practice we went 1vs 1, 2 vs 2; and the scenarios were: -3rd and 4 at the 28 convert or try a FG -2nd and 8 at the 38 convert or try a FG -4th and 3 convert
Each group gets a chance. Each group works a scenario and either wins or loses, best of 3.
That's the scoring, win or lose.

Got super competitive, our DC and I were talking crap to each other. It was a great session and productive for all. I want to do more of it. I love the idea of scenarios for that too.

We do something similar during Team periods.
Each play is worth a point, turnovers are worth 6 points and TDs are worth 6 points.
When it is Offense vs. Scout D, the offense must gain 5 yards to earn a point. If they don't, the Scout D gets a point.
When it is Defense vs. Scout O, the defense must hold the Scout O to three yards every play to earn a point. If they don't, the Scout O gets a point.
Instead of punishing, we started rewarding the winners with helmet stickers.

I'm part a core staff that has been together 12 years through 2 schools. These periods get the coaches jacked as much as the kids. We've got a saying that been around forever when these periods get going pretty hot and heavy and one side is getting the best of the other in the deal, "The salad bar is open, you can get all you want". Kids don't always get the meaning, but the coaches dang sure know.

We usually keep track of positive/negative plays for the session. If it is an offensive team session I will mark a plus or minus on my script next to the play (usually 30 play script). However many negatives we have is how much we condition at the end of practice. Sometimes we modify depending on the conditioning that day.
At one point this year, our scout team thought they were smart and started allowing our starters to move the ball without putting up much effort. After that, we assigned a coach to grade/watch the scout teams effort. Sometimes our conditioning would be a mix of negative effort by scout and negative plays by starters, total of both negative plays, or just pick one sides negative marks if it was a good session on both sides so we reward both for working hard.

We platoon, and the chit talking starts in the weight room before practice even starts. It escalates as practice goes on, depending on which side of the ball is having the better day. We dont need to add any more incentive to play hard. We usually spend more time reining in to minimize fighting than we do pushing to compete.
We will, sometimes at the end of practice, put the ball on the 10 and run 4 plays for conditioning. Winning side doesnt have to run. Of course, everyone is so beat into the ground by the end of practice that 6 40-yard strides, or whatever the losing coordinator decides, really doesnt hold much merit.

I have done in the past points besides scoring and 3 and out.
Every play is scored
Offense gets a point for any gain over 5 yd. 2 pts, a play over 10 and 3 points for any play over 15. 1 pt per first down (we are driving), 1 pt per completion, 3 pts for a TD
Defense gets a point for any play under 5 yards, incomplete pass, pbu, sack. Any turnover forced is 2 pts., score is 3 points

We end every practice with a comp period. It's best of 5 plays with different scenarios. Could be 3rd and long, 3rd and short, Redzone, 2 pt conversions, etc. Sometimes we'll mix in a fun one like O/D linemen catching punts, or WR/DB 1 on 1's, but normally it's a true team competition. We'll go best vs best and the losing side has to run 4 half gassers and gets bragging rights. It really brings out the competitive spirit in both players and coaches.
