We had the first day of contact Thursday, things went okay. We meet after practice to go over and get ready for Friday's practice. HC is concerned that we still need to be better at having all 11 chasing the ball. So this is what we came up with and it worked pretty good.
In perimeter/outside period we added a different tempo or expectation: we call it Tri Tag or 3 tag. The play doesn't finish until the WR is tagged 3 times and they have to be counted out by the coaches. The ball carrier keeps running and juking to the end zone, and if he gets into the end zone he keeps running around in the end zone and back out until he is tagged off 3 times.
Another thing we put in to try and make them go all out every play is the first team has 3 plays in a period, then they are off for 3 plays while the 2s are in for 3 plays

Both good ideas. We start every day with some kind of pursuit period too. Not the old fashion cone pursuits, but just simple stuff, like I throw the ball to one of 4 coaches standing around the field and they chase it, or I throw an old helmet bladder somewhere in they chase it. 3 reps if they are good and get out, if they aint good we keep going. But I really like those ideas.

We used a double whistle. First whistle stops the offense (except the ball carrier). 2nd Whistle is blown when all 11 defenders have tagged gotten to the football.

we use thud, but this is to 1- focus on getting the 2nd, 3rd, etc... guy to the ball 2- focus on ball carrier finishing plays 3- a little hustle conditioning; after 3rd tag off everyone is to hustle back to the 40, reset and run another play for 4 plays in a row when we go thud, its more game like; spot the ball hustle to the new LOS, run play, repeat to the end zone. Just a different idea on tempo - full contact, thud, 3 tags

We do Pursuit first 5 minutes of defensive practice and we will two-whistle any group (7on7, Inside Run) or team drill.
