Morning Fellas,
I have a couple questions regarding fundraising and I'm hoping you guys will chime in with your thoughts and suggestions. First of all I must say that I stumbled upon this site a couple days ago after seeing a link to it on Glazier's site and I couldn't be happier. Tons of powerful information that I'll use to help our staff and players continue to get better, so to the guys who have shared their info on here, I appreciate it.
I Coach at a smaller school in Iowa and the fundraising at our school is really piss poor to be honest. We have a booster club that's pretty much non-existent and only runs 2 fundraisers a year that I'm aware of and of course that money has to be divided up between all the programs. This will be my 2nd year now and I've taken over control of the fundraising for the football program only. We have a very small balance in the bank and I'm working to get that improved so that we can provide the kids with the proper equipment and tools they need to be able to succeed. Along with that comes stuff that the staff could use as well, HUDL Sideline, some clothing, etc. We just don't have the funds to do any other that right now as our #1 focus has to be on the equipment and that's about it. I'd like to get new jerseys in the next couple of years and that will surely be between 6-8k all said and done.
I'm interested in learning what types of fundraising you guys have had success with in the past? The majority of our kids come from average to below average households so financially most of them don't get a whole lot, and if their parents don't have money to spend on their kids, they surely are not going to spend it on donations to the football program. Below is a list of some of the things I've done the last year and one thing the program had success with in the past.
Chick-Fil-A and Buffalo wild wing nights..... one night a month anyone that goes in there to eat and says they're with our football program earns the program 10% of their final bill. Both of these have been huge flops in my opinion and neither has raised over $200 for our program.
Bowling Tournament....I organized a bowling tournament that was held last month and to be honest I felt like it was pretty successful, although I know how much work went into it to only make $1200 was a little disappointing but everyone had a blast and we ended up with 96 bowlers so it was a good night overall. Just a ton of work for a coach to do, felt like it was something the booster club should be doing and not the coaches.
Media Guide....The school has done this 2 other times in the past and both times they made decent money from these things. They contacted local business to buy advertising space in the media guide, which is a tax write off for them and then we include coaches info, team pictures, program records, etc. Problem is it's costly to have designed, I think it was nearly $1700 last time and will cost us close to $1300 this time + printing costs. All said and done this made close to 6k the last two times it was done. It is something I'm definitely doing for this coming year and have already begun work on it.
Casey's Card.....If you're not from the midwest you likely don't know what Casey's is but it's a great gas station with amazing pizza and other good food. Kids sell the cards for $20 a pop and we get a cut of that. Been a pretty decent money maker in the past but has caused a lot of frustration between the staff and parents. Parents of the middle schoolers think they are getting shafted when their kids are selling the cards and they are not getting new jerseys, helmets etc at the middle school level. Simply not true as a lot of their equipment has been replace just not jerseys.
Sorry for the long winded post, I just really could use some help with some unique ideas you guys may have. Thanks!
