Here's the situation we were in today. 4th down on our 45, up by 8 with 16 seconds to go vs a team that has had good success through the air during the game. Our first two long snappers were knocked out with injuries, down to the jv snapper. What would you guys do? We elected, after much heated debate, to take a safety with the punter scrambling and then stepping out of the endzone, and kickoff. We burned 10 seconds off the clock on the safety. It was a risky play but it worked out as their kickoff return ended the game.

Very gutsy. Especialy if your punter had tripped and fallen before reaching the endzone. Obviously you thought about all the variables and it worked. Congratulations!

smart
the only thing i would consider is to have a real athlete back there instead of a standard punter
or just have the regular offense in, and have the qb just run straight back out of the endzone

I probably would have run the hook and lateral from a punt formation just to try and show you up one...seriously, great move and I would hope that I remember to do the same thing if in a similar situation...

Another option would have been to have the center direct snap the ball to the QB and have him pitch it back to the punter. A team in our district did not have a deep snapper that was very good for several years and this is what they did. I don't remember them ever getting it blocked.

If the quarterback throws it backwards about 20 yards to the punter he would have the opportunity to burn more time as the defence would be watching the throw and some may consider they need to do their normal force/containment reponsabilities on the outside.

I can't help but feel that it was a bit much on your own 45. In our league a team gave up a safety when on it's own one, to then kick it back to them for better field position.... but I think the risk of the guy falling or whatever and them getting the ball on your 10 was a big risk. However history is written by the victor and all that, it worked and you won! So shows how much i know.... Hope your long snappers are ok for next week.... bet you are too .

Quick kick, everyone should have this. Its great on 4th down around midfield, or 3rd and long when you're backed up. Would've been handy in this situation too, but sounds like your quick thinking paid off!

Ditto what Tog said about having a really good athlete back there to take the snap and haul butt back through the endzone. I have taken a safety in a similar situation but we were backed-up not out in the middle of the field.
Kudos on your gutsy move.
