I just got done watching HBO Real Sports, and they had a story on high school offensive lineman. In this story they talked about high school offensive lineman were getting bigger and bigger. What almost made me sick about this is the fact high school coaches are encouraging their lineman to get up to 320-340 pounds because they think it will help them get scholarships. I can guarantee you this is not the case, due to the fact when lineman get this big they lose almost all mobility and this handicaps a lot of offenses. I coach at a Junior College which is rated in the top 5 and one of our biggest concern is the fact our lineman are to dam big. I also still don’t see why people think if you are big you are stronger. I don’t think this makes any sense due to the fact most of the weight these lineman are adding is fat and not muscle.
Ok I am done with my rant I am curious to see what other people think about this including offensive line coaches.

I wish our line was smaller this year and we ave prob around 230 across. Of course we pull a lot and I like a smallerish line to get moving quicker. I agree that coaches are pushing their line to get to big. Bigger isnt always better look at Denver and their line they are the smallest in the NFL and are usually at the top in rushing. I would think most colleges want mobility in their linemen and dont recruit on size alone(maybe height) since I am sure they will push to add weight once a kid is on campus. Another example that comes to mind is Iowa they are always converting HS TE's in linemen out there with great success. Two linemenb from this area who played at ND and in the NFL where smaller guys who had great technique. The guy at ND was moved from TE to C and started for 4 years I think. The other example was Stepnoski from Dallas who played in all their super bowls and was 250-260 max at C. I hate how people think cause a kid is big they can automatically play on the line. Give me though smaller guys over big 300 fatties any day of the week.

My dream HS O-line averages 200-210lbs and runs 5.3 40s. I want kids that can pull, trap, double team, down block and Iso lead (Dart and G-up). I dislike having big OLs because they don't get off of the ball as well- I want my front 5 firing off of the ball and hitting someone in the mouth.

Yeah, I think I'd like that kind if line also Tog. Unfortunately, I don't have access to any genetic engineering technology (or that kind of budget required to feed the monsters). However, there are some 6'5 240lb college femal basketball players in MT that I could certainly hook up with. I'll just breed an All-American offensive line.

Tog, that sounds almost like Highland Park's OL last year.

Strong, quick, athletic linemen. Foot speed (rope jump) and 20 times are what matter most to mefor O-line.
