I have always been a 2-man platoon coach. I have only been a part of teams that 2-man platooned. Players have always been either Offensive players or Defensive players. However, we do NOT have the athletes to strictly 2-man platoon anymore. How many of you cross-train players? How do you split Offensive / Defensive time up during Spring ball? Summer practice? Early season practice? In-Season practice?
One idea I have is to have primarily Offensive or Defensive days... say Varsity Defensive primary Monday and Tuesday. While the Varsity is in Offensive groups, the JVs will be in Defensive groups. I am not sure time-wise how this will play out.
Any suggestions?

A lot more people play kids both ways at the HS level than can afford to do it like college... Here we spend 1/2 of our practice time doing "Offense" and 1/2 of our time doing "Defense". Anyone who doesn't play one side of the ball (OC doesn't need 7 RB's, but that 7th RB may be the nickel safety) will do extra indy time with their position coach during offensive sessions and will run the scout team for the other team during group and team sessions.

Cross-training and having 2-way players means keeping both offense and defense very simple. Nothing fancy since players don't specialize.

We do 1 day offense focus and 1 day defense focus. Each day there is about a 30 period for the other side of the ball of the focus.

Last two seasons we have been doing offense only days and defense only days. Works out really well for us. I think its easier on the kids to be able to focus on one side of the ball and just learn what they need for that side for a day... the only other thing we do different is sometimes at the very end of the day we will work some review stuff on the other side of the ball. For instance at the end of a defensive practice we might line the offense up and work on red zone conversions. Nothing new just repping our base stuff in a game type situation for 10-15 minutes.

You could also just split time evenly each day. Take out the amount of time you want to spend on special teams and split the rest in half for offense and defense.

We have an offensive day and a defensive day with the other side getting a short ten minute period. As a DC I love it because we can get into detail without feeling rushed. Also, if your HC is the OC, as has been the case everywhere that I've been, it keeps him from eating up our defensive time.

What about film? How do you break it up?

What about film? How do you break it up? We watch film on Sunday so we won't lose time during the week.

The last staff I worked on was in a similar situation and we kept the coaching staff two platoon, which allowed us to become experts at coaching one position. The players one platooned and we split practice so half was offense and half was defense, when Varsity was doing offense Fresh/Soph was doing defense.
We tried to start as many different players as possible to keep guys fresh and also keep morale high. In a perfect situation we would not have any starting offensive linemen plus one backup playing defense. They would then take the defensive time and go through extra EDD and Indy time with the Oline coach.
As far as film we would do it with varsity only for about 30 minutes before school. Although with the use of Hudl I am not sure that is even necessary.

I am thinking about watching previous game film on Saturday mornings which would allow us to watch practice / upcoming opponent film Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Monday and Tuesday's film session would be with your primary position (offense or defense) with Wednesday being with your secondary position on the opposite side of the ball.

I like splitting the day 50/50. But it takes discipline to stay on schedule and make sure youre getting even time.
And yes, like miller said if a player only really has one position then keep him with that coach during that period. He can get more indy time and get more reps by serving as a scout team guy.

We do 1 day offense focus and 1 day defense focus. Each day there is about a 30 period for the other side of the ball of the focus. We do similar to this. The last 20 minutes a day are dedicated to the other side of the ball. If it's an offensive day, we may do a turnover circuit for all 20 min, or 10 group - 10 team. On Defensive days over 20 min on offense is either group and team tempo, or Indy's and Group ( 7 on 7, Inside run groups).
