I'm a new HC in a 7-team league here in NorCal, starting my 2nd year now. The league 'administrator/boss', the guy that is responsible for the activities for the upcoming year, is working on changing how the all league selections are made. I don't know what didn't work before, but there is apparently some need/desire to change the process. Our team has really sucked the past 15 years, best record was 5-5. We went 4-6 last year which was the 2nd most wins since 2001. So I figure some of the procedures in the All League selection process are there to make sure that we/the bottom teams were represented.
I went through this last season, ended up PO'd at a team we beat and their scoring of our players. But the process is that each team gets a Franchise Player, supposed to be the team MVP. Players I talked with view this as the 'give Jimmy a cookie' award. Each team gets a Character Player, the guy that exemplifies all that is good. Then, each team gets 4 nominations, by position, plus 2 nominations for each league win. For us, last season, that equated to 1 Character Player + 1 Franchise Player + 4 Team nominations + 4 Win nominations (2 league wins). This meant that we had 2 automatic 1st team, Character and Franchise, and 8 nominations. Of the 8, 1 was voted in as 1st team, the other 7 were then 2nd team.
Our 8 nominations went into the pool, by position, as did the other nominations from the other 6 teams. The list was sent to each of the coaches to vote on, basically voting for the opposition players, excluding ours. Players with lowest totals were 1st team. Those that were top vote getters by position were eligible for OL of the year type awards.
How are the selections made in your league/conference? I'm just looking for how this is done in other areas, might give me some ideas on how things could be done differently.

In our district, the number of nominations a team gets is based on their finish in the standings. Coaches basically pick who they want to get All-District; there's no voting done.

It changed every year and used to end up being a big gripe fest. Used to be division winner got 'X' amount then 2nd got one less, etc. Problem was there was no positional basis, so it was feasible to have 6 QBs and 5 WRs as the 1st team offense.
So the next year they kept the same principle of awarding the champ with more slots, but made it fit into 21 personnel and a 4-3 defense. Once again the team that won put their QB in despite him not doing anything, and the team who took second (whose QB was all state first team) had the QB finish 2nd in all league.
Now, they finally just have all coaches nominate whoever they want, provide stats and anecdotal evidence, then one night get together and vote. You cannot vote for one of your players but most of the coaches are decent enough people so it balances out.
I get why they have had these old rules, because somewhere along the way some coach started gaming the system to get his guys spots they probably didnt deserve. But in the end I believe most coaches know what is right and a normal get together and vote works out.
I will add that they also added a 2nd team, and an extra spots on O & D. Some may feel it waters it down a bit, so you have to watch how far you go; but in the end it doesnt really hurt much to give kids awards and maybe give them something to put out their come recruiting time.

Each coaching staff picks their own all conference performers. Number of spots you get depends on where you finish in the league.

Every place I've ever been (Texas/Louisiana) the process has been almost identical.
Head Coaches gather the week or so after last district game. Each coach gets a chance to nominate a player for each position(Could be yours, could be another guy) Everyone votes on the nominees. Kid with the most votes is the all district guy. If the league has a second team it goes to the runner up.

It used to be identical but now instead of meeting the coaches email nominations in, the admin in charge sends out a compiled list then the coaches vote by email. I have to say that the processes that I've seen in some of these posts seem weird to me.

We don't have an All Region team anymore
Coaches just nominate who they want and pretty much they all get named, effing ridiculous

I might add that there is usually large quantities of food and drink at these meetings paid for by the district champ.

You get a coach whose team wins league/district who has less players on 1st team then he makes a stink about it. Maybe he doesn't deserve more players, maybe his team was carried by a few studs; but his point seems valid- we won the league shouldn't we have the most all league guys. So they make this a rule, and once its a rule its hard to get that toothpaste back in the bottle. Its all a bunch of politics, and we all see how that shakes out.

We use what we refer to as a Slotting Method. Teams earn a certain # of 1st-Team and 2nd-Team picks based on their place in league and the number of league wins. Then, we pick the teams in a sort of fantasy football draft order based on the number of selections. For instance, the league champion may end up with 9 total 1st-round picks and in the 1st round, they get to first select 4 of those guys to go on the 1st-team. There is no voting outside of what we call Special Awards (MVP, OPOY, DPOY, etc.)

First place team in gets 5 all-stars Second place team gets 4 all-stars Third place team gets 3 all-stars Fourth place team gets 2 all-stars Fifth place team gets 1 all-star Sixth place team gets 1 all-star With 3 open slots
Not position based. Ties are voted out on open slots, league mvp chosen with nominations then a vote (no ties for that either).

In CanWest, coaches nominate and then vote by email, and sort out any issues on a conference call. There are some stereotypes, like a centre in his last year is a shoo-in, but it's not like people's lives depend on this.

i think it's you get 4 or 6 nominations
plus 2 additional nominations for every LEAGUE win
All of the positions are put up across a big white board teams can nominate any of their kids they want, but can't go over their total (based on league wins)
so league champion, has best team, and therefore gets the most players nominated
if you nominate a kid 2 ways, that is 2 of your nominations
after all the names are on the board, we decide how many to select from each position as 1st team and 2nd team... anyone left after that on the board gets honorable mention
we go a little overboard as a league... we don't pick 11 first team O and 11 first team D plus a kicker and a utility like other leagues here do (that adds up to 24 total all league positions)
our league provides 30 medals that say 1st team all BVAL
so we decided to honor as many kids as possible so we give out all 30
those "extra" 1st team spots we change yearly... just depends on a specific position and if there are a lot of guys nominated there... for example this year was REALLY strong at RB and LB... so we gave extra spots there
overall i like it, it can get a little bit like we are passing too many awards out, but we have a good amount of flexibility each year and most of the time we get it right
every now and then a WTF sneaks in there ... but that is our fault as coaches
if i know Johnny from my school, and Timmy from yours are going to be fighting for a 1st team all league spot... i cant vote for my own kid, but i dont wanna vote for his real competition (Timmy) so instead i vote for David Sack O Crap... the scrub from the 1-4 team... but when half the room thinks like this, David Sack O crap ends up being a 1st team kid

From what I understand, staff's I've been on in the past get together, coaches nominate, give their case and vote. Wins were important but ultimately don't impact anything in regards to nominations and players. There are so many "extra" spots at then end that can have multiples, so some exceptions can be made if there are 3 deserving FBS QBs for some reason.
So many votes receive all-conference, then nominated players receiving votes but not enough received a distinction and players nominated but no votes received another distinction. MVP, offensive player, defensive player and linemen of the year (OL or DL, not both) were major awards.
I've also been on some that are slotted. While easier for the coaches, I don't think it does the players justice. I've been on poor staffs that had more deserving players than the wins we received. I've also been on teams where we were decimated by injuries.
