I recently read Coach Vint's blog on culture and really liked it. His blog lead me to Coach Jackson at Grapevine HS in TX. I've attempted to contact him and I'm waiting on a reply. I looked through his Twitter posts and he uses a kind of boot camp for his team. It appears they will split into squads and there is a scoring system. They compete and also appear to gain points for things that help build the concept of team. Players are held accountable both in and out of practice.
Does anyone do this? I'm looking to find examples, ideas, how scoring systems are set up and so on. I've talked to some of my players and they really liked the idea.

Coach Jackson got back with me. The scoring is based on mistakes. So the squad with the lower number is winning. They track it as squads and as individuals. They also do a number of other interesting things with what players are required to wear and earning the right to have/do certain things.

He has some really good ideas about building culture, and creating excitement. Plus he's pretty funny.

Like the idea of points to boost accountability. Couple questions.
What do you do about kids who either join late (say end of school) or kids who move in?
Kids with legitimate reasons for not making lifts (have to get siblings ready for school for example)?

For kids that move in late: Start their points from that point on. They should get "back of the line" treatment anyway. Not to punish but to reward the players that have grinded ALL off-season. For kids with legitimate reasons, they will have to make up the points in some other way- good grades, community service, etc. The points system does offer some flexibility.
