I am the HC of a middle school program. This past year I had a coach who was a retired high school HC come to my school. He has over 30 years of experience and didn't coach for several years before this past one. He helped me out this past season and was great.
Last month, he got a call from the high school head coach we feed into. They want him to come aboard their staff next season. They did not mention this to me at all...the guy came to me and told me. I don't know whether this is acceptable to do, if I should be upset, etc. Of course I'd like to keep him on my staff - he knows the game and if he leaves, it'll just be me and one other guy. I was upset initially but am trying to look at this from every angle. He teaches at the middle school with me and said no decision had been made yet, but basically it may come down to where he can get the biggest supplement.
What should I do?

You serious?
MS vs. HS job? No question if he wants to do it. From your point, it sucks. Lay out all you can. Coordinator title, more money if possible etc.
Boils down to this being a step up. Hard to fault a guy for improving. Lateral moves, yes be pissed.
Always thought the HC who wanted the guy should call and talk to their boss first however. Common courtesy. Not so common anymore.

Absolutely, can't blame him for stepping to the HS. I want to one day as well. I just feel as if the HS staff is trying to steal him from behind my back or something. We are the only feeder school for them so we work closely together.

Well, as to what you should do regarding the offer - nothing. In fact, I don't really understand the question. The AC has a job offer he's deciding on, and whether he takes it or not is up to him. You shouldn't be even trying to dictate what his next move is. You can certainly try to convince him to stay, just like you would if he was mulling an offer from a school in another town.
As for whether you have a legitimate gripe with the HS HC, probably. You deserved the courtesy of a head's up, being a somewhat affiliated program. I just deleted my write up about what I thought of the HC, since I don't know him. But yeah, you have a right to be pissed at the guy.

If you are a team player you should be all for what is best for the PROGRAM. The HIGH SCHOOL program. That is what feeder school means, you feed the high school that you are associated with. The head coach should be in control of all of that and if he thinks this guy is better at the high school you should do whatever you can to help that go smoothly. JMHO

what should you do? what CAN you do? If the guy wants to go, why would you try to stop him?
The real question is does this guy want to invest the endless hours required to be a part of a Varsity program? If he was a HC and then became a middle school coach, I would think he wouldn't.
Why can't you just get another assistant?

It's not so much ask permission as say hey we like Jack and want to move him up. You should start looking now to add another great coach to replace him.

No need to ask, that would be foolish, just a little heads up as a courtesy would be the right thing to do since it's a direct feeder. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using proboards

A courtesy call would be nice, but I don't think it's required. If your staff is successful at what you do, people will want them on their staff. It's the good & bad of being a good HC with a good staff. If the varsity HC thinks your AC can help the program be successful, take that as a testament to your staff and part of the program. Should you be frustrated? Yep. Now, go recruit/ attract another AC, teach him how to do things the right way, and be ready for him to move on as well. You're in a unique position sometimes as an HC to not only develop athletes, but coaches as well.

Yeah, it's not so much the request (as I would say yes either way), it's the courtesy of at least letting me know so I can start looking. I still haven't even heard anything from the high school. I wouldn't know a thing if it wasn't for my AC telling me.

That is not good then. At least you'd hope the AD's at the schools would talk to each other and let you know.

Lets face it. Every school and there feeder programs have different relationships. Some places work together and some not so much.d I honestly wouldn't get upset about it. Is what it is. Good coaches are hard to come by especially someone with 30 years under his belt. You never know he might have used the middle school coaching to get his foot in the door at the High School.

If you are a feeder then the HS HC should have enough respect to call you, if for no other reason then to keep the relationship good. End of the day we are in the people business, and last thing you need is someone who feeds your program mad at you....
