Over the last several months I have had the opportunity to visit with many, many coaches, and I more convinced than ever that culture is the key to building an elite program. I have always been a big believer in culture, and that we must build it with intent, but I now believe it more than ever. What are you doing to build culture in your program? What are you doing to build character and leadership? Do you have a vision and a mission? Are you a slave to your talent? I decided to share my thoughts on this with a new log post. Check it out here: coachvint.blogspot.com/2016/03/developing-culture-character-and.html

Great blog post coach. For anyone looking to build a winning program, this is where you start. I was fortunate to take over a program with a lot of potential last year. We are on our way to building the culture, but it is a tough process. I read Urban Meyer's new book also this off-season. If you are a coach looking to build a winning program, read this book. Stop worrying about your schemes and start studying everything you can about culture.
The two biggest concepts we took from this book was culture and leadership. Not that we weren't doing this already, but it's great to see what some of the best programs in the country are doing.
A great follow up book to this is "Small Unit Leadership" by Dandridge Malone. It discusses how the military builds units and their leaders. It feels like it is talking to football coaches as well.
If you are not working on leadership you will NEVER build a program. Kids are tired of hearing what you have to say. Identify your best leaders and teach them what the rest of the team needs to know. Then give them opportunities to teach others.
In high school your culture better be centered around the weight room. Unless you are just blessed with the best talent in the state every year, you will never establish one of the top programs in your state if you don't make everything about the weight room. To be honest, I don't enjoy being in the weight room. I hated lifting for football when I played. But no matter how much I dislike it, my kids will never see that in how I treat its importance. I am an offensive minded coach, but if that's all I sell to the kids we will never be as good as we can. Our vision includes much more than just the weight room, but nothing is more important in our players' minds.
For those that are really interested in building a better program I recommend spending time with great local programs and reading everything you can on building culture and leadership. Go read Coach Vint's article as well. It's really good.
