Okay, my question for anyone willing to share their thoughts. How do you win back kids to come out in the fall that left the program after a coaching change? Our head coach retired after the 2014 season and quite a few of the kids just didn't warm up to the new coach. We went from 35 kids in '14 down to 21 last season. We were successful and made the playoffs, but we faded down the stretch. I think winning fixes a lot of things, but these kids aren't willing to come back. Is it worth the effort to keep talking to them or do you just walk away?

Convince them that it's not the coach they should be playing (or not playing) for, it's their classmates and friends who need them. And, unlike most other sports, organized 11-on-11 football is not something they can really ever play again.

I'd focus on your youth. Get the freshmen and sophomores out, You'll have 35 - 40 again really quick. And those kids will always regret not playing.

Kids who enjoy the game and competition don't just quit because of a coaching change unless there is something wrong with the coaching change.

We've got one of those life skill billboards on a road near my house that reminds me of this. A picture of John Wayne with a sign, "Don't much like quitters, son." If it's good enough for the Duke. . . .
