What are some good 4th quarter heart drills you guys use that really pushes the guys to dig down deep and get more out of themselves than they think they have? We are looking to work on our players digging deep, getting some grit, and coming together to overcome adversity.

Take 4 cones and make a 20x20 yard square on the field. Put them in 4 groups however you want to and each group starts at one of the cones.
Along 2 parallel lines of the square players will sprint between cones. Along the other two parallel lines players will bearcrawl between cones.
All players go at the same time.
This is a tough drill especially on bigger guys b/c big guys, and will challenge your team's collective guts. We usually do 4-8 reps.

We finish the day with a pursuit drill, 5 minutes, thats 10 reps for our ones, 5 for 2s, and 5 for rest. Then we jump into a goalline session ( we play spread teams so we aren't banging) and everyone has to get to the ball every play, even if the whistle has blown. Next day, we go from pursuit to 2 minute drill vs. Offense. We want our kids to react and focus when they are tired. Gets them from focusing on being tired and instead, on their job.

Northwestern does 100 yuards sprints. They have forty seconds or soemthing to do them, and they do them until every one makes it. Then they go and do push ups sit ups. The coach yells otu a number and when he says that number they do that number of push ups and then rapily change and do the same number of push ups. It's a greatd rill, and they do it after every practice.

If you really want to get them ready for the 4th quarter do about 8-10 40's before you go into a team session. They use to do this at Pitt to get them acustomed to playing when they were tired or winded. Works well

These are all great ones - We picked up some big tires, about 5' across, and do tire flips. We have to use 2 guys at a time but it's a great work out. Starts as a Dead Lift, turns into a clean and finally a push press (have to make sure it doesn't flip back on you!). We have 3 tires and 30 kids in 3 groups. We do it relay style, where 2 kids flip it, run back, next group goes, runs back... for 50 yards and back! By the time they're done they are gassed. Great team builder as well.
