Hey coaches My staff and I are looking for colleges to go visit during our spring break week of March 28-April 1. We are looking for programs that are more odd front or multiple defense, pressure defense, man coverage philosophies. We would also want to visit with college staffs that are known to be solid in the special teams game and/or strength and conditioning.
It doesn't have to be a D1 staff. We are just looking for somewhere to road trip to and make it a worthwhile trip. Any recommendations based on past experiences would be greatly appreciated
FYI: We are from Michigan so preferably in the mid west but we will consider others as well depending on your recommendations!

Alabama comes to mind along with Ga tech. Personally id look up Sabans coaching tree or former associates and start there.

Speaking of Alabama, does anyone know when they release their Spring Ball schedule?

The scheme isn't the important part, it's HOW do they do what they do that you really need to know (and why I don't attend many clinic sessions). preach it!

I don't know what kind of Defense they run but Western Michigan and PJ Fleck are building a great culture and tradition that I think would be beneficial for anyone

I think the best visits for spring ball are
1) colleges as close as possible so you can spend a few successive practices with the staff.
2) not necesarily what you run scheme-wise. The best stuff you get out of spring is how they run things, how they talk to their players, how meetings are run.

I second trying to visit Fleck. He's turned that program around and is doing a heck of a job there! Would LOVE to be able to spend an afternoon with him one day

Not sure what defense he runs, but I listen to him talk about special teams at a Glazier Clinic a few days ago and came away very impressed. Another person on my staff listened to him talk about DB's and was impressed with him as well. The Ball State coach in Muncie, Indiana comes to mind as well for specail team programs. Its almost a golden rule, whatever program the Head Coach is also the Special Teams Coordinator, they are going to have some good things there.

I heard great things about how hospitable Richt was at Georgia. They havent announced a clinic date but I'm definitely keeping an eye out for when Miami has one.
But I second looking at smaller colleges. Usually a little more accessible. Cal Poly SLO still remains the gold standard of college clinics in my book. But hey, im easily over won by all you can eat and drink tri-tip and beer.

Coach Lembo moved on to Maryland as the ST coach this past year, but even the new staff in Muncie is very good. Their HC is Mike Neu, who was the QB coach for the Saints. Two of my old bosses are on the EQ staff there, they have nothing but good things to say about the new staff.

Flying my guys out to San Diego St. mid March. They are 3-3 with 3-4 capabilities. We went out there 4 years ago and had a blast. They have tremendous special teams schemes. They ran the opening kickoff back for a TD in their bowl game vs Cincinnati and never looked back. We're going back this year because SDSU was the only team in the country to finish in the top 15 in Total D, Scoring D, Passing D, and Rush D. They get a lot out of their kids, plus the weather is great out there!

Would LOVE to be able to spend an afternoon with him one day I spent a little time with Western Michigan when I had a couple kids they were recruiting. From Fleck down they have a very clear message. If you are into the mental and motivational aspects he will blow you away. One of our kids ended up going there and starts on the Dline for them. He loves the staff and their vision.

Might be too far for you but if you are looking for odd front stuff and pressuring like wild men you might take a peek at the University of Houston, staff probably wouldn't try to big time you like power conference places would, and they are doing some interesting things and bringing pressure from everywhere. If you decide to do that, don't get a hotel that is near campus..U of H is in the middle of a pretty rough neighborhood.
