Honestly, I've never had a bad exchange either. It's always the generic "good game, way to keep fighting" etc.
The only time I have ever had a different exchange was coaching against my alma mater (I also started out coaching there) because I knew all of those guys because they were former teachers, former colleagues, and great friends.

Good game coach. Good luck coach. Over and over in that order unless I know them better.

There was this one awkward time this past season when there was this one coach from the other team who decided to bro hug every single coach in the coaches line..he seemed like a nice guy but there was a huge coaches line traffic jam and it kind of got annoying mostly cuz we played like dog crap and lost....and yes I'm a sore loser.

i bet you never had this.
playing a prick of a coach. i go to congratulate one of his kids - who played a good game made a ton of plays. one of the kids coaches turns to both of us and makes a remark like "dont let this guy fool you, the film will show you played like $hit".
i was stunned, it took me 10 minutes to figure out if that really happend or not.

I was pretty junior on both of my staffs, so generally, I was just "Good game coach" or, like a bunch of you have said, if there is a stud on the other team that played well, I will congratulate him. But, there was this one time...whoa boy.
We were playing an away game against a JV team with our 9th grade team. We were beating them by 2 or 3 TDs, not really fun for the other team, but hey, we were good. Start of the second half, one of their kids gets pushed by one of ours following a punt. This immidiately dissolves into a fight. Our team does a good job staying on the sideline and returning to ours from the field, but their bench and some of their stands clear. After a few minutes, we get everything cleared, the police escorted the parents back to the stands or out of the stadium, the refs call the game because of the "overtly hostile atmosphere." Cool, I'm going home early. Then out of no where the opposing team's chaplin comes up to the us and starts telling us how we should do better controlling out players and how we had no class. My response was not appropriate for this site.

We have a coach who when an opposing coach says "Good Luck" he responds with "Thank You." He says, "I can't say Good Luck back because I don't mean it. I don't give two ****s about them." I crack up every time!
I personally say something different to each head coach, depends on the game and what has transpired. Always say something honest, but never negative. One incident I'll always remember happened after a hard fought game last year (a season that wasn't very successful for us). An opposing coach actually approached our huddle after the hand shake line as I start talking to our players. I was a little peeved, but he proceeds to tell our team how much he respected their effort and resilience and told them they were fortunate to play for a great coaching staff. I was shocked, and very grateful.
