Prior isn't going to commit yet... I don't know if he wants to wait and see which schools NEED him after everyone else signs or what... COLORADO is kicking butt I guess... Hawkins sure can recruit!
I love signing day... Get a chance to see some of the kids I coached/coached against sign places. The Havili kid 2 years ago that starts at FB for USC, Katoa going to Colorado who had 7 sacks against us 2 years ago as a Junior... We COULDN'T block him! Drove us crazy!

We have a TE who signed with Ft. Hays State today. That won't make ESPN, but it is a big deal for a small program like ours.

Today, unfortunately, is the culmination of the undoing of a lot of young men

I read he has been playing basketball and has not been able to visit Oregon yet and Penn State(his father would like him to go there). He was set to sign and the night before had a talk with his father and now wants to give Penn State and Oregon a look before making a final decision. On a coaching note: Do you encourage your players (who are being recruited) to visit all the schools they are able too? Even if they are already leaning in a direction?

case--that is a great question.
I tell my athletes to be "true" to the system. Take the visits they NEED to make a decision, but don't take visits just to take visits. It can come back to bite YOU and the H.S. program in the future.

coach5085,
I don't think he is grandstanding. Penn State has been working very hard recruiting his parents, something the other schools reportedly have not been doing. Defensive coordinator Tom Bradley recruits this area and he is an outstanding recruiter. Reportedly he has been spending a lot of time with Pryor's parents. It seems like Terelle is going to take an official visit to Penn State because his father really wants him to go there. The reports in the local papers and on the Pittsburgh TV stations pretty much said the same thing. (Jeanette is just 20 miles from me) One local newspaper reporter said on TV tonight that Pryor told him he hated all the attention and wants to get the process over with. Local reports said that he Pryor had made a decision on a school but it was not the same school his parents wanted, so he is delaying to take a couple of more visits to make sure. The scuttlebut around here is that Penn State is the school the parents want him to go to. Guess we'll all have to wait and see.

On a coaching note: Do you encourage your players (who are being recruited) to visit all the schools they are able too? Even if they are already leaning in a direction? If the school is a definite no, then I would encourage them to respectfully decline. If they really are unsure- take the visits! That's what ticket sales and that logo on every shirt/hat pay for! I developed this philosophy the hard way- A few years back I had a guy that was early committed to an ACC school but decided to take a trip to UGA - he came back to school saying "I'm going to Georgia"- I had to sit him down and "talk" to him about what a huge mistake it wouldbe to decommit- luckily he bought it and our ties with that school stayed in tact. If he would have went to UGA, that ACC school would have never came back again!

Originally I had read/heard the same stuff as you, and I thought it was a good move on his part to wait. HOWEVER, I heard last night that the kid is going ot sign on FRIDAY. Waiting 2 days is NOT taking time, making visits, and making a sound choice. Waiting 2 days is grandstanding and creating your OWN PRIVATE "signing day" I really hope it is the first situation, and not the latter.

coach5085,
Nothing written around here about signing on Friday. I just rechecked our local websites and they all say the same thing that there is no timetable. Not sure where you heard the Friday signing from. I would agree with you though if he does sign Friday without visiting Penn State or Oregon.

coach5085, I just found this article on the Sporting News website which seems to tell the same thing I had been hearing. Kevin Gorman the author is a local sportscaster with FSN and also writes for a local paper. He seems to sum things up pretty well. Here is the link: www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=347923

Lsrood I had heard my information on espn radio...but I don't remember if it was one of the talk shows or programming dedicated to the signing day.
Again, this is just become one of the worst days of the year for me...seeing these kids at tables, with a bunch of ball caps in front of them, feinting one direction, picking up the other...soaking up all the attention and "glory"...and we wonder how in the world the Adam Joneses, Mike Vicks, (off field stuff) and Terrel Owens, Randy Moss, Chad Johnson, (on field stuff) people come about.

I heard yesterday that Pryor is waiting because of Penn State and that he is leaning towards either Penn State or Ohio State for two reasons....1. His father is in a wheel chair and he wants to be close enough where his Dad can still come and see the games and 2. a place where he can come in and learn and not be thrown to the wolves right a way...to me, those seem like two good reasons to take a few days to weigh out his options!!

coachd5085,
I agree with you on the theatrics. In some ways it rivals the NFL Draft where they make a big deal out of rookies who have yet to play a down and yet get the celebrity treatment. Here it is HS kids who are getting the celebrity treatment and they haven't even suited up yet. Something is out of whack!

coachd5085 and lsrood,
I completely agree and they wonder why kids act as if they are gods gift to the world. Its because they are being treated like stars before they can even prove themselves.
Just let them be football players and stop making them celebrities and let them be kids.
Its a spectical!

Being from Kansas, I have to ask, K-State recruited 21 Community College players this year and very few HS kids. An analyst for talk radio called this "a black hole." I have my own opinion but, I wanted to know what you guys thought.

If that's what Ron Prince feels they need to do to compete, more power to him.

Last year Penn State recruited two JUCO players (o-line) for the first time in forever. I definitely agree its a quick fix and not the way to build a program.

Coach Prince took a major gamble, imho. Basically he will sink or swim with this class. Taking to many JUCO's sets back your future if they don't pan out. It is also said, you generally don't see the full effects of a JUCO player until his 2nd season. I fear he took to many players of marginal skill. You shouldn't be taking JUCO's to fill depth, but more so for quality of needs. Basically he overkilled the process.
Time will tell, but his approach has rarely been seen and really has never worked. Look at Callahan at Nebraska. I believe in 04' he took a decently heavy JUCO class and it backed fired on him badly. Bill Snyder struck gold with the Jeff Kelly, Darnell McDonald, Michael Bishop, Frank Murphy, etc. classes, but that doesn't mean it will work more times then not. Also those kids were HIGH level JUCO's. Prince's class isn't filled with the JUCO AA's.
