Coaches, For those of you who do not 2 platoon, How long do you practice for? What is your daily Time allotment for each segment.. O, D, Special teams. Former player of ours who is Coaching in college was by and we were talking about practice late in the season and he made a comment that they never go over 1 hr and 45 min.. I replied, well you have 1 way players. So I just wanted to see what other programs are doing out there. We go for 2 and a half hours. 15 Min Stretch, 15 min Special Teams 60 O 60 D. As the DC I can segment it any way I want.. we just get 60.. well 65 if I am sneaky. Mon O goes First, Tue D goes First Wed O goes First. Thur is Pre game. ( based on playing Fri night. )

Our practice week is a little different:
Mon: Weights, film, then we go out and walk through our scouting report and game plan (We also give them a paper game plan).
Tue: Offensive day with a ten minute defensive period. Two and a half hours (We do ST's for 20 minutes on T and W)
Wed: Defensive day with a ten minute offensive period: Warmup 10 minutes Tackling 10 minutes ST's 20 minutes Offense 10 minutes Individual 30 minutes Inside drill 20 minutes 7 on 7 or Team Pass (We make it clear that THEY ARE NOT TO SACK THE QB. They find out quickly that I don't go off often but if you want me to, hit the QB in Team Pass) 20 minutes Team Defense 20 minutes.
We're allotted 2.5 hours and you can plainly see that this adds up to two and a half hours.
Thursday: Lift, walk-through.

We practice for only about 1 hour and 15 minutes on Monday. That's JV night so we only have around 15-20 kids depending on injuries. We go for 2 hours and 15 minutes on Tuesday/Wednesday. Tuesday is 1 hour 10 minutes offense, 50 minutes defense and 15 special teams and then Wednesday it's opposite. Thursday is 1 and a half hours. It's a game simulation where we go through special teams and situations and drive the offenses (scout and ours) up and down the field.
By the end of the season our Tuesday/Wednesday practices were only about 2 hours.

I'm not too fond of our practice schedule, I feel we waste a lot of time, but we made it to the title game so maybe it works?
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday: Film & talk to kids (30 Minutes) Walk to Locker room and dress (15 Min) Stretch & Pre practice talk (15 Min) Offensive Getoffs and Cadence (5 Min) Special Team (5 Min) Off Install (15 Min) Off Indy (10 Min) Off Small Group (10 Min) Off Team (20 Min) Agility (10 Min) Tackling or Block Destruction (10 Min) D-Indy (10 Min) D Team (20 Min) Special Team (5 min) Post Practice Talk (10 Min)
Slightly over 3 hours a day.

As I have gotten older, I have realized that less is more. Here is what we look like on a typical week:
Monday - JV Game - Varsity Lift (30 Mins) Film (60 Mins) - We will split the kids up Line and Skill. Tuesday - Defensive Day - Helmet Only. Team Meetings / Film - 30 Minutes. On the Field 1 hour 45 mins to 2 hours Wednesday - Offensive Day - Helmet & Shoulder Pads - 2 Hours on the Field Thursday - Split Day / Pre game (we play a lot of Saturday's).
We will go longer in the preseason and early part of the year - but as the season winds down we get shorter. Preseason practice will be 1.5 Offense 30 minute break, 1.5 Defense. The first few weeks of the regular season we will be on the field for about 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Sunday - Film on previous game and lift. (This day is optional-usually have about half the kids) Wish it could be made mandatory. Monday - Kids that didn't lift on Sunday lift and film on new opponent for all. Corrections will be made from prior week on an individualized basis. Practice in shells usually lasts an hour and a half. Review mistakes from week before, brief team on the new opponent and install game plan. Will do some Team Run and some Skelly along with our daily musts (Tackling for Defense, Screen Game for Offense, and Punt Team) Tuesday - All Lift. Practice in full pads usually goes closer to 2 hours. We try to keep it at 1:45. Continue to go over game plan. Focus more on team stuff (Team Pass, Team Run, Best on Best, 1 on 1's, Skelly, KO, and KOR along with the same daily musts from Monday.) Wednesday - All Lift. Practice in shells usually lasts around 1:45. Finalize game plan. Mostly a Best vs Scout day. Hit all special teams. Do the daily musts. Thursday - JV and Ninth Grade Game so these guys have a stretch routine. Varsity watches film to replace the lifting time. Practice is a walk through in just helmets, usually around 1 hour. Review every facet of the game. Review Game Plan. Friday - Varsity Game. Ninth graders and JV's have a light lift and watch film. Varsity put through stretch routine and film.
We play very few guys both ways.

We are 2 platoon and and practice for 2 hours regularly. As the season winds down we change take each segment and shorten it from 5 to 4 minuets and that takes a half our off of practice. That way its not very noticeable to the athletes. the biggest thing that helps us stay on time is a having a clock at practice. we practice on the game field and before that our manager would keep us on track. But the clock and coaches buy in to coach on the run was our biggest improvement in practice time.

New HC this season. 3 hour practices. Coaches platoon, players don't. Tuesday, & Wednesday:Warm up 10 minutes. Special teams 20 minutes. Tuesday first 75 minutes (after special teams) varsity players are with Defensive staff. Sophomores and freshmen are with Offensive staff. Second 75 minutes players flip. Wednesday Offensive Staff gets varsity first, sophs/fresh with Defensive staff. Flip after 75 minutes which turns into 90 minutes because I've yet to meet a HC/offensive coordinator that can stay on schedule.

Just finished 3rd year as a head coach. Once first game is under our belt, here is our typical schedule. No practice is ever over 2 hrs and 15 min. By middle of season we are under 2 hours. Varsity and JV come in and lift at 7:15 am on Mon. and Wed.
Mondays we watch film after school. Try really hard not to show too much of past weeks game. Try to identify common themes that need fixing or were done well. Move onto next opponent. After film, out to field for dynamic warm-up and play an ultimate football type game but use a tennis ball and garbage cans as the goals. Don't touch a football on Mondays once games start. Was very nervous trying this but not sure I would go back. I think it has kept some kids out for football and maybe got some to come back out.
Tuesdays are offensive days and cover kickoff return and punt. Typically have a 10 minute o-indy time after warm-up, 15 min. 7 on 7 where o-line is basically getting more indy, 20 min. 1/2 line, 30 min. 11 on 11 some live and some against bags, 15 min defense install for next day.
Wednesdays are then defensive days and cover kickoff and punt return. After warm-up do 10 min. tackling period, 10 min. d-indy, 15-20 min. 7 on 7 where d-line gets more indy, 30 min. D vs. scout O, 15 min. O review.
Thursdays are film then run through all specials and review O & D.
Field goal and extra point depend on when kicker can be there. We have snatched a soccer player every year for a long time and work around their schedule. Not ideal but that kid has been way better than anyone else we would have had no matter the year.
