Coaches,
We need to practice more efficiently. We are looking to create a core group of student managers to help with our football program. We need some student help to accomplish some/all of the following tasks.
* Pre-Practice Setup * Practice Filming (Booth & Small Group) * Film uploading to Hudl Post Practice * Water during practice/games * Drill set-up & transitions * Keeping Score in Practice * Running chains in practice * Game day set-up & filming etc
We have NEVER had a set of managers at this school. There's no history of kids volunteering with athletic programs. So, we are starting from the ground up.
Hoping that Coaches out there who have a successful managerial program can share information about how they started, how they keep managers involved, what their duties are, how they are rewarded, thinks that worked, things that didn't.
Really any help at all would be welcomed. I know there's many of you out there who have great programs and we want to copy you haha.
Thanks guys.

Every where I have been we have used special Ed. kids. Some are obviously more trainable than others but many want to be a part of something. We give them a jersey and gear them up and they work really hard to play their role.
My own daughter has Down syndrome. I hope that she is interested in getting involved some day with what her dad does.

We have two good ones. They are with us at all practice and games, so they get the PE credits just like the players. I think that is the starting point. Finding the right kid is where the work comes in. We try to identify freshmen that love the game but for some reason or another don't actually play. We include them in our team building, team meals, etc.

I was at a JC, so it was a bit different in that we had specifically delineated departments, but if your school has a film magnet program or even an audio-visual department, you might want to see about recruiting some kids from there for filming. The same goes for any computer-related programs the school might offer. You can usually get computer-literate kids, who can handle Hudl pretty easily. I spoke to the department chairs, and we were able to offer independent study credit to kids willing to participate.

We have a form that manager/ water girls have to fill out before we even interview them.
We have 6 this year. Everyday water and make sure the training room is respectable . They flip the towels when they get there if that needs to be done. Sometimes one will film practice And since we have 6, on Mondays 2 stay in and finish putting away game uni or undershirts that haven't been out away yet, they also do this if we watch film before practice .
They really don't help much with field set up Just water and make sure a trash can and towels are out
Our coaches have their pe classes set the field up on game day,
And then last hour before the pep rally we will take the tables out, and set the helmet kit, extra man, and stuff by the door, and then around 5 a student assistant sets up the echo system My self and another coach the end zone camera A couple freshman that don't suit up with varsity take out the stuff by the door And our dc that is like our tech guru sets the camera up.
And everyone on the team is suppose to help take stuff in when the game is over . Same with on the road when it is time to load the trailer .

jmg does the thing we do. AV and computer kids earn some credit for their class...AND...we make them part of the team so they can earn a Letter for the sport. Earning a Letter is a big incentive.
They're recognized at the banquet and in the yearbook.

We have also reached out to NHS kids who need community service hours.

We're a big school and we have about 5-9 girls that do just about all these things you listed. One of the AC is in charge of them and has one girl basically manage everyone else. They do a heck of a job and know what to do & what not to do. Obviously we can't get this luck every time but make sure you can get students you can trust to do simple tasks on a timely basis.

We also had some girls on-staff, but our luck w/ them was hit-or-miss. Some of them came out, b/c they wanted to mingle w/ the players, but others did a really strong job. Overall, it was something worth keeping an eye on, but I would say that it still worked out in the team's favor.

Yes definitely They typically volunteer their time in exchange for being around the boys Some are awesome and genuinely do a lot to help out but eventually some become team pin cushions

We had a girl where I was last year. She was phenomenal. Had all of our stations set up by the time we hit the practice field every day, hustled her butt off during games doing different things for us. She genuinely loved the game of football, understands it, and could honestly be a good coach one day if she ever wanted to and could get someone to give her a shot. She even coached some of my OL drills with my supervision and did a really good job. She would listen to my coaching points and could even point things out that I missed that players weren't doing perfectly (but wasn't an annoyance and didn't want to get in the way). She only did it when I encouraged her to.
She also was cute, so the guys worked harder in their drills when she came around. I know this can backfire if the ladies become a distraction, but in this case she worked out well.

Can post in your school if kids need service hours toward graduation? Also, staff or parents or want to be a part of it in some aspect. Do not shy away from injured players as well. I know you probably want something more stable in place.

while our team managers on field were a little "unique"
i had GREAT film kids the last 3 years
i sent a mass school loop message (our schools email/gradeboo system) telling all students we wanted helpers
i had a whole group of sophomores say they were interested
i have had an army of about 7 filmers it is great, some times they have to miss for this reason or that reason, but i assigned 2 for EZ, 2 for skycoach, and 3 for pressbox angle
so if one misses for some reason, there's another kid there who knows what i want
those little sophomores have grown up, seniors now, i even let them walk out after football on senior night
i need to find some new helpers for next season. I have 1 junior who joined our crew, but i have a lot to replace
