Another thread got me thinking; doesn't anyone emphasize time of possession anymore? Looking back at our season stats over the many past years, we have never won the ToP battle. And it usually isn't close. The only part of ToP that has been close for us has been in the 4th quarter when it has been close to evenly split.
I'm sure the double wingers may look at it as a key stat, but with the push for up tempo offense's, I'm wondering does this stat no concern coaches as much? Defensively we don't really worry about too much either, and our HC is the DC (other than the "let's get this game over"). Now we do do 2 platoon, so if we run to defend 75 snaps it's only on 1 side of the ball.

It's purely a narrative statistic, and totally misses the point of the game.

Its true that time used by your opponent can't be recovered.
1st playoff game...our opponent used over 6 minutes of his first possession to drive down and score a field goal. We took the Kickoff back for a touchdown. There was somewhere around 5+ minutes left in the first Quarter...we hadn't had an offensive snap and were leading in the game.
Time of possession means nothing in that case. Number of snaps means nothing, either. 3 yards and a cloud of turf gets you First Downs...but you get no points for first downs.
IDK...I suppose I used to pay attention to all of that stuff...probably because all along the way I worked for coaches that put stock in those statistics. Somehow, it doesn't seem to be as important anymore.
I know when we're winning and I know when we're losing...I know too, that when its close we depend on basic football, no penalties, and a sound kicking game. I probably pay more attention to that than anything else.
