OK, let's face it, our kids are going to eat junk food, fast food, snacks, and more throughout the year. We try to talk to them about what they should be eating, but if their parents aren't making it for them, they are eating whatever is fast and convenient.
What I want to put together is a listing of things to eat from fast food places, snacks around the house / cafeteria, etc that are healthier (not healthy obviously) alternatives to some of the other stuff on the menu.
Any and all help is appreciated!

This is a good topic.
Another consideration for the reality of our team is I am happy if they just get a chance to eat dinner, regardless of what it is....

I talk to the kids about their food choices but, honestly, I'm happy if they just eat something. Some kids hate the school food and will skip lunch then wonder why they aren't hitting the weights they should be hitting

As much as I despise foxnews....Yeah I wouldnt touch Chipotle either, and the food is expensive depending on how you configure your food

I just hope some of our kids get to eat. Last week our HC took a kid to the grocery because he found out the boys mom was in the hospital for 5 days and there was no food at the apartment.

I am a big believer in good nutrition and fueling the body and I try to relay that message to the kids as much as possible. It is hard for them to eat quality foods though when they are living at home or don's have the means to get those foods.

Here's what I tell them: try to eat as many things from the perimeter of the grocery store as possible and avoid things that are in the aisles. When they eat in a restaurant, try to eat things that are as close to their natural form as possible. Neither piece of info is perfect, but they're a really solid guideline for eating better.
The problem, as mentioned, is that they have very little control over what is put in front of them.

I calculate an estimated BMR for each kid (in the offseason) and give them some baseline out-of-season caloric goals for training and non-training days, as well as in-season caloric goals.
Then I show them what a decent diet looks like with a sample menu. I also provide them with some "good" choices at Wawa/Royal Farms, McDonalds/Wendys etc...
I give them a protein goal between .75g-1g per lb bodyweight, and a min/max fat goal. Then we adjust carbs based on their goal of losing weight/maintaining/gaining.
I use Excel and a mail merge with Word to enter their vitals and spit out a info sheet for each kid. Nothing crazy. Hardest part is to have the kids recognize what they are currently eating and make adjustments to that.

Copy of the spreadsheet. Download and fill in the highlighted columns and you'll see how it works Vitals

There is an eat this not that app that shows you the most healthy items to eat at most restaurants. Even fast food places like McDonalds, Burger King etc. I've suggested it to my kids to use. Now them actually utilizing it is another topic altogether. But you could print off the options for each and hand them out if you wanted to take the time.

The only thing that I tell players not to consume in-season is soda., leads to cramping. "Doctors have issued a warning about excessive cola consumption after noticing an increase in the number of patients suffering from muscle problems. Evidence is increasing to suggest that excessive cola consumption can lead to hypokalaemia, in which blood potassium levels fall, adversely affecting vital muscle functions. Symptoms can range from mild weakness to profound paralysis. Worldwide consumption of soft drinks was 83 litres per person per year in 2007 and is expected to rise to 95 litres in 2012. But it has already hit 212 litres in the USA. " www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/05/090519075420.htm

Most kids that are playing sports and training hard can eat whatever they please as long as they are getting quality food. The mantra that I use with my guys is " eat like you are at grandma's house for dinner" and they seem to understand that pretty well. You get some meat and potatoes and a vegetable side. You can't have cake until you've finished your supper. Probably not optimal but it's better than what they would have chosen.
