Does anyone have a criteria for what your players need to do to become eligible to be a captain? Leadership curriculum? Minimum number of lifts they need to do?
Thanks!

A buddy of mine does a point system for his captains: weights, games played in the previous year, grades, attendance/ tardies, practices missed, etc. The get positive/ negative points for all the criteria. I think he only allows the top 30 or 50% of the eligible players to be on the voting ballot for captains.

Yes - We just finished our season with this particular process in place. I really liked it. It went as follows:
Captain Application Process:
Write an application letter due by the end of May Read a leadership book - chosen by me Attend 6 Leadership classes during the summer - classes are taught by me and held before or 7 on 7
Anyone who completes this process is part of our Leadership Council. In year 1 we had 8 that went through it:
4 SRs, 3 JRs, and 1 Soph.
From the group - after our preseason scrimmage (two weeks) the kids will choose 2 captains and the staff will choose 1. We had the best leadership we had in years and I was able to count on the entire council as leaders. We will have 4 kids still in the program as leaders through the winter and spring. Looking forward to continuing this.

The kids themselves nominate 4 players, 2 from offense and 2 from defense, then they vote and elect their own Captains. They select their own leaders because they know each other better than I know them.

Like someone who didn't go through the offseason workouts and bleed, sweat, pay-the-price with the rest of the squad. And if so, how would you handle that? I've always been part of staffs where the players were only allowed to vote for certain players who met criteria, so I'm just curious how it would work when the voting process is completing open.

It has NEVER been a problem. The kids aren't dumb...they know who the leaders are. These guys have been on the field and doing something since they were in first grade.
