Coaches
I recently got some great advice off the site, so I would like to throw this out there for discussion. I am at a school that I took the job two years ago. The school has been struggling for wins for the past 6-8 years. over my past two years we have won 3 games and right now are 0-5. We are in a very good conference with some great coaches and players. My team is beat up both physically and emotionally. Players take a lot of criticism from classmates and community about being so bad and never winning games. With four games left in our season, which we have a chance of winning the games, any advice on trying to tackle the emotional issues that the players are going through. Players are hearing things like, I bet this team puts 50 points on you today, Football is always going to be losers, you guys will never win games, why don't you come and see what winning looks like, etc. I have a great group of seniors who I think are still playing hard, but there are players who are showing signs of lets just get the season over. Any thoughts

Why not make it into a positive? Sell it to your guys that it's them against the world. Put a chip on their shoulders. Get them angry, get them ready, then turn them loose.

There is nothing better than getting a team to play with a chip... nothing. If you can get them to believe in the "we are a family," "noone respects us" stuff and really take it to heart, you can get great results. Have them play with an edge. Remind them what they're doing is hard, everyone else b!tching... that's easy.

#1 be honest with them and tell them the schedule is about to lighten up and if we play our best we have a chance in these last 4. #2 tell them the real losers are the people at school who won't get off their butt to do anything and have nothing to believe in an nothing to win or lose. #3 you play for yourself and your teammates, not some loser who doesn't have a right to criticize.

Circle the wagons.. I love that us against the world mentality when things get tough
Kids will buy in to that if you really sell it...no one thinks we are any good, no one thinks this team can win a game but I believe in you guys approach.. They will fight for each other and the team

Agree with the chip on the shoulder thing...it can help. My opinion would be if you do have those good seniors I would bring them in privately with you and the staff. I would talk to them about how it's their senior year and they've only got 4 more opportunities, how you need their help and leadership to keep these other guys focused and positive, be beacons and leaders on the team and keep everyone in the right direction. As well as talk about the work that has been put in it is about the team, no one else knows the work put in to compete every week.

We play with a chip most games. When we've come out scared we've been beaten. 5-3 this season. All 3 games were the deer in the headlights games. We're still in the playoff hunt and could finish 8-3 in before playoffs. 2-8 last year playing SCARED 10 straight games.

Been there. I know exactly about the hallways at school and degrading the football program. Stay the course, and be as positive as you can.

We also play with a chip. We are undefeated this year and pretty dang good. Our staff always finds a way to make our guys play with a chip. We will make something up if we have to.
