that guy is an idiot. plain and simple. CDC facts prove that football is NOT the most dangerous sport, and yet it is the one that gets all the attention.
if someone would just go to the CDC website and take a second to dig through the percentages of injuries/fatalities, they would see that im right.

There is a war on football in this country whether intentional or not, and I worry it will lead to the end of the game.

Baseball, succa, are year roun sports in these.. Not so coincidentally soccer is now played in the fall. There is a war on football.

Among the spectacles of our sports-entertainment complex, there are only two in which people are regularly killed — not accidentally, but directly as a result of that sport’s essential identity and, more ghoulishly, that sport’s essential public appeal. One of them is auto racing. The other is American football. Of the two, there is only one in which children are now regularly killed. That sport is not auto racing. That sport is American football. This weekend, the sport killed another child.
Regularly? Wow....just wow. I didn't even read beyond that paragraph.
Who does this Writer work for? What channel is Friday Night Tykes on?
Too bad the masses will never connect those dots.

Regularly Killed! Agenda like that makes me sick. We should all blow up the editors mailbox till they print a qualifying article with some truth in it or retraction.

Regularly? Wow. Didn't the young man have a heart condition?
More kids die in auto accidents. Better not let them drive.
I didn't know Grantland was still relevant.

I didn't read the article, because I came on here to comment on another topic - but as football coaches we really need to be advocates of our sport. We need to educate parents, particularly those on the youth level, of why the game is safer than ever (back it up with stats) and the benefits of participation in that sport. It is apparent to me that this needs to happen, however, how to best accomplish this is difficult. I would be open to idea's on what other coaches have done.

I'm with you on all this. it needs to be approached as facts vs. facts. we are never going to overcome the fact that there are inherent risks involved in our sport. risk of catastrophic injury is there all the time. proper coaching and equipment helps, of course, but accidents can and do happen. if parents can understand the difference between an unsafe game and simple implied risk that's involved in literally every single sport then we can make some progress. I think at every level progress can be made by letting your community know that no expense will be spared in getting the best equipment to protect their kids, and that every coach on staff will be properly trained in technique, concussion protocol and cpr, and that their kids will be in the best possible hands. of course if any of that is a lie, then you might want to fix those problems before you start addressing that one.

No, his death was not due to a heart condition. He, along with another 2016 football fatality (in Louisiana) were both killed after being hit on a football play. This injury was internal bleeding caused by a lacerated spleen (some reports say the spleen was enlarged, which is sometimes a result of Mono, but I haven't seen anything about Mono in any report) I think one problem is that football coaches (as evidenced by threads on this board) do a very poor job of framing an argument. What needs to be done is 1) show how small a percentage 5 kids (average amount of kids who die playing HS football each year is). Frame that in the perspective of how many kids die going to prom, graduation etc.

Mom told me not to judge a book by it's color, but I feel like this guy doesn't own a TV and makes his own socks.
