Does anyone send physical scouts to their opponents games anymore?
If so, what are you looking to get from that?
Only thing I could think of is if you have a guy who is experienced and can pick up nuances in person not ascertainable from film.
Or you want the snap count/presnap procedures to replicate for scout team.

If the game is close, within an hour drive, we send someone. Got an "old timer" who just wants to help out hanging around, so he goes and watches for things you can't pick up on film. Helps a little, but not great.

If you are a good snoop you can pick up all kinds of things, like sideline control, how the coaches signal in plays and how many kids act like they are not happy. Don't try to write down numbers or plays just watch the game and sidelines and other things. It can be worthwhile and if a kid gets hurt and leaves you will be more likely to know those kinds of thing as well as what kids actually look like physically.

I try to go to whenever possible.
Looking for things that you can't easily discern from film:
Snap count Injuries tempo
I also think we get a better feel for the team's size and speed in person than thru film.
Is scouting in person a definite difference maker? probably not, does it make me feel more a little more comfortable on gameday? Yes.

This 1 of the duties of my current position. We actually chart & draw out the plays, numbers of the players, d&d, hash etc. It's pretty intense to be honest, but it's used quite a bit, mainly b/c we get such crappy film from some of our opponents. There is value in live scouting for sure.

We don't send anybody if they're playing at the same time as us but if they're playing when we're not some of our coaches will go. That happens pretty frequently here because in our league there are games on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (city stadiums). In fact, because of weather, one game was postponed to this Monday and I think there were more coaches there than regular fans.
We don't have much that we're specifically looking for. We get the players's numbers for our scouting report. I'll draw up pall patterns because sometimes you can't get them on film. I'll write down formations and plays to get me ahead start before we get the film. Otherwise it's mostly intangibles like how many actual players they have, as opposed to JVs who are just there and suited up.
To be honest, it's often a PITA. A few years ago we drove two hours to scout a playoff opponent. Halfway through warmups I said to myself, Oh, they're tony Fraanklin." and could have left right then. Sadly, I didn't drive.

I like going to the games if I can. Like others have said, you get little things from a live game that you don't get from film. Sideline demeanor, are the kids up or down on the sideline. Sideline coaching, are the guys getting coached up as soon as they come off and what the interaction is like between the coaches themselves. Crybabies, who are the kids who mope when they get beat. Workhorses, who are the dudes that are always on the field and how many guys on the sideline are just there to take up grass. Overall team discipline, do the inmates run the asylum. Seeing their speed and size in person instead of through the context of relative size/speed of the team they're playing on the film. There's tons of little info you can get if you know what you're going there for.

In our league there seems to be a divide between older and younger coaches when it comes to live scouting. When we go to a game we always see the veteran coaches. The newer guys? Not so much.

To make sure we have a film of an opponent (because we have had some exchange issues), we will send a frosh coach to video an opponent. All the guy has to do is a good job of filming; that's it. By the way, before we sent him on his first trip, we coached him on what we want and how to film it. Doing this insures that we have a film to work on the day after a game. We don't waste any time.

I started out coaching middle school and scouted every week. There is no better tool to learn the game than to scout.
What I think you can get is snap count, tempo, signals, injuries, attitudes, and up close size comparison. I like to get down as close to other teams as possible because I want to know how big those guys are. Film does lie about how big guys are. Also you can get a better idea of a kickers distance in pre game and how good backups are in pre game.

I started scouting. Happy I don't have to do it anymore, but don't mind doing it when we don't have a game. nice to watch the game and get a feel for everything as a whole and not in 10 second cut ups.

Drop your phone in your hot tub and now it won't work. Put it in a bag of rice to get the water out. First world problems, third world solutions.

I scout for the varsity, I'm the freshmen head coach but I go to games to scout.
I take pretty good notes. It's actually what they like best about me being there. -Separate a piece of paper into 3 parts, Special teams, Offense, Defense -I look at all 11 starters for each phase and get their position and # down -Each player is noted on what their technique and aggression level is like -Take notes on their snap counts, Some teams use the NFL-ish "Blue 22, Blue 22 Set Hut" others just say "Go" -Look at how far the kicker/punter gets the ball down the field -Their speedsters. Do they make 1 cut and go, do they dance. -Side line manner, Do their coaches freak out on bad plays. If they're losing do they show bad body language -Big schools with marching bands in the stands. Do they play during the snap and screw teams snaps up -Injured kids. I'm usually there when they start pregame warm ups and see who is getting taped up and who is wearing certain injury gear like the shoulder thing that keeps it in place.
No detail to me is too small. If I feel it adds something to what the varsity can use, I add it in. Jot it down.

I scouted a team and the grass looked fine but it had no roots so kids were slipping all over the place. Another game, there was this weird mist thing and I put it down that it was extremely wet because with the resolution of cameras, it wouldn't show up on film.
