I'm not usually part of the "don't punt" crowd but a scenario came up in the Packers-Bears game. With 6:15 left and an 8 point lead, GB had 4th and 3 t their own 9. They punted but I wondered if there was an argument for going for it:
1. I trust Rodgers more than I trusted the GB defense today.
2. Even with the punt CH would get good field position (They got it at the +41)
3. If CH scored they needed a 2 pt. to tie. That's where this is different from Belickeck's situation.
4. If CH scored Rodgers had plenty of time.

I don't see going for it there. Chicago is team with new coach. Why make their job of scoring that much easier if you don't get it. If you punt it they still have to score, they still have to convert 2 point play, and you still have AR. The only thing that changes is time left on clock.

It's the 8 point lead that makes the difference in my opinion.
If it were a 1 point lead, I could see your argument.
At 8 points you are worse case at a tie with the ball last.

If your offense can't get 3 yards then you are paying them WAYYY to much.

At one point in my last stop I was the C team/freshman HC and told my OC we'd go for it on any 4th and 4 or less. Several games into to the the season, we're doing pretty good but hadn't had many 'say what?' 4th ands.....
We're playing a tough program early in the game on our own 23, and its 4th and 3. The OC looks at me and I say 'call a play'. He's signaling a formation over and over and keeps asking me, "Are you sure?" again and again about to chyt his britches. I just say, "Go!" We get the first down and roll right along.
It's feel thing, but it's also a confidence thing. If you do that stuff, it's got to be part of your strategy and your team make up.
The NFL is about the tendency chart and protecting egos. If you've got a set, then don't be afraid to lay them on the table for everyone to gaze at. I hate the NFL.

It's not only NFL coaches who rely on tendencies and have egos. The "feel" thing is what I'm talking about, though. I'm not a "never punt" guy. I've argued against it several times on these boards but I think that there are situations where going for it in an unusual place makes sense. The scenario that I described in the OP is one that would make me think about it.
