I am going into next year, trying to find a way to get more people involved. We have certain players that are good at a few things, but have the possibility of being great at 1 or 2 things.
Example- We have a Soph. who has great height and good leaping ability. He catches the ball well, but does not adjust to a ball in the air as much as I would like him to. He is not someone I expect to play much on D (we are mostly ironman football). But, he does not block well enough, nor catch the ball over the middle well enough to get full-time playing time.
I wonder what some of you think about specializing a player. Making him our basketball type receiver (jump balls, box-out). Is it a disservice to take him away from reps running slants, digs, etc. and blocking to spend more time on that particular trait. We want him good enough that he can still come in on other plays,so we don't tip our hand when he comes in. We just can't afford to lose reps with guys who can do what he can't and vice-versa. Not enough time or coaches.
What do you guys think?

yes!! IMO, it is our job as coaches to find what areas each kid is good at and find ways for each of them to be successful. We had a kid a couple years back that was so slow, very little athletic ability, but understood the concept of long snapping with 2 hands. We had him focus on being our long snapper on PAT and Punts.
