Any suggestions for how to install defense when your team has only 16 players (not all at practice the same night)? I am having a hard time installing concepts like spacing, gaps, reads when we are looking at mostly air on the offense side of the ball. I hat to think what will happen to us when we line up for the first time as 11 on 11. (not real confident about the O either, but defense is really bothering me.

Keep it as Simple as you can. Use dummies to simulate offensive linemen and emphasize correct alignment and base responsibilities. Use Indy time to work on reads. You dont have to use team to teach a linebacker or DL to read a downblock or pass set.
The other suggestion I would offer is recruit your butt off in the hallways. Last year we had the same problem... 17 kids dressing because of injury and lack of participation. We hit the halls hard. Had current players sending letters to players encouraging them to come out for the team. This season we currently have 50 out. You may not have numbers like that in your school but when you only have 16 kids every body you can get is helpful in some way.

Thanks Coachorm. The advice with the dummies is a good start. recruiting is a non issue at this moment as registration has closed and rosters are locked now. I am not teaching in the middle school where this rec team is based, but will share that the growth of year round sports (baseball, and Lax in this area) have killed football 'round here.
I am going to have to tape up the old arms and start holding a bag, and getting some dads off the sidelines to hold some shields.

Yes, trash cans are cheap. Use them for the OL, and then you can take your other guys and move them around to represent different formations.
We even use the cans for stunts/blitzes. We have 45 kids on our team and we still use the cans.

We use cans as well they are a great, but you could also go half-line to get them more ready for the speed of the game.
