I went to Chicago for 4 days during our state mandated dead period. We went 2 days a week in june and I did everything I could to be away from football the rest of the week. Enjoy my June weekends a lot.

Relax? I'm never relaxed. I'm tighter than a bungee cord holding a fat guy. When I sleep, I look angry. Kids have told me that I always look mad. I have ridges and grooves in my mouth from where I keep my teeth gritted all the time. When I went on vacation this year to the beach, I brought clinic notes to read, and downloaded game film to watch. It's not healthy, but it's the way I am. I was that way before coaching, and barring a heart attack at a young age, I'll be that way after coaching.
After a game until I watch film the next morning is the closest thing I get to relaxed. I have a good, close friend and I always hang out with him after a game, win or lose. Yeah, Mr. Beam is always there for me.

Even when I am home, I have a game or a clinic on most of the time, even if I am not necessarily paying attention.

Can't really picture my life without it. Which probably isn't healthy.

I don't think you necessarily have to get away from football completely to relax for a week or a few days. I don't go on vacation for a week or two every off-season but that doesn't mean I don't relax. The last time I went on vacation I tagged games on Hudl for teams we were playing the upcoming season every morning and at night. I was spending time on football but I was still relaxed. There's nothing stressful about tagging games in the off-season or watching a clinic or drawing stuff up on paper. There's also really nothing stressful about being in the weight room in the summer.

I would much rather watch or listen football than say a family reunion. I think the guilt is unhealthy, but not the enjoyment.

To me the offseason is just less tiring, not necessarily more enjoyable. Sort insanity to the people around me, but I would glady stay in season year round.

A question came to me while reading the threads about how hard kids are working in the summer but I didn't want to hijack the threads: Do you and your coaches take some time off during the summer? In the threads, some guys alluded to the fact that grinding all year wears on coaches just as much as the kids. I always take a week off right after school gets out. I go back to PA and visit family and friends. Our HC took a week off to go on a cruise. What about you guys? Do you do anything to get away and relax? I'm especially interested in hearing from the guys who really grind it during the summer. Football is my time off. My regular job sucks lol...

AD/Head Coach here and as stated between the camps, passing leagues, and weight room along with AD duties and 3 young kids, there is no time for vacations. Dreaming of making it to 65 and living down south and eating shrimp and going crabbing- that is the vacation view. Though I will admit, a good bottle rum and cold beers makes for a vacation at home on certain summer nights

Camps? How many camps? And who says that you can't take the kids on vacation?

Easier said than done. I only have one other guy on staff that works as a teacher, every other guy has a job that is year-round and it takes them into long hours during the summer. Reality is that if I do not run our youth or team camp it will not be what it needs to be. Maybe an old-school guy in a lot of ways but I still believe that when you are a head coach you have to be the guy putting in huge hours and in charge of anything that takes place on your campus in terms of football. Really do want passingly but again I started that I'm in charge of that in the area so it's tough just to leave that. Still get to spend time with my kids during the day vacations during the summer or not an easy thing to pull off. Kind of sad in a way, but in many ways success has set a poor standard in terms of work expectations.
