Looking to see if I want to make changes to how we start practices. What are some things you guys do?

ENERGY. We do an awesome, awesome warm-up I stole where our guys get to do chest bumps and handshakes to get some zip going. Then we immediately combine a specialist period with some EDD's for position groups and we are off.
We had some problems in the past of practice taking too long to really get going. So we sat down with the captains and talked about ways to get the kids juice flowing. Focus improved greatly since then. Makes coordinating much easier and our position coaches love it because the drills are better.

We did EDD by position to start practice. I asked each position coach to do a drill that was position specific that would not only be productive for that position but also get the heart rate up and the athletes sweating.
We would attempt to do some sort of competitive team drill right after, such as a two minute drill, and we were off and rolling!

Thanks coach I like that idea. We had moved away from team warmups to stop chattering (coaches and players) and I am looking to get practice uptempo and fast paced.

We condition to begin practice
My general preference is short sprints With a set interval of rest time (20-25 seconds rest)
I'll vary the distance from 20 yards at our shortest
To 40 at the longest (when HC steps in he prefers 100s, I do not )

We started doing a 'pre-practice' in your position groups that was about 10 minutes long--was supposed to involve position specific drills that also got your kids warmed up. At the end of the time the HC would blow a whistle and the groups would sprint into a large circle and do team jumping jacks--then huddle around the captains (do a little hooting and hollering) break it down and sprint back to their coaches to start Indy period. I liked it--new HC wasn't a fan--I'm no longer at the place.

We get the blood flowing by running the kids through some type of form running period to start. Depending on the day, it is either our linear run progression or our agility circuit (all heavily influenced by Dale Baskett). IF it's just the varsity, it takes 5 minutes or less and then we go into a quick dynamic flex. After that, we're off and running.
Also we give the kids 20 minutes between the end of our meeting to the start of practice, so coaches usually tell their guys to be down early for a quick and easy pre-practice circuit, maybe once or twice a week depending on the position coach and his preferences.
