I was recently hired as the head coach at my alma mater. I was formerly the defensive coordinator and would like to stay that way. The head coach before me was the offensive coordinator, so now I'm in need of one. I have 2 guys on staff who are interested in the job, and I made the decision to interview both and treat it as a vacant position. I felt this was the fair way to find the right man for the job, or at least it was better than appointing someone from the current staff. I don't have much leeway with hiring and firing of coaches, I pretty much have to deal with what I've got.
So, I'm getting some flack at a meeting from one of the coaches about the way it should be done. He states that normally a head coach comes in with his offense and defense and that is what we are going to run and how we are going to run it. Most of this staff was here last year, and know my philosophy defensively and that is pursue relentlessly, tackle and force turnovers. Very plainly put in my opinion. The vehicle we use to execute this philosophy is a combination of the Miami 43 and the Scream and Splatter 43. Now, offensively I'm very familiar with the older Tony Demeo stuff and Paul Johnson's offense. Basically I like the triple option. I have nobody on the current staff who knows anything about the triple option. As I stated earlier, I cannot fire all the offensive staff and hire new ones. My philosophy on why I like the triple option is simple, I beleive that you are better off reading than blocking, and by giving the kids reads to make, in every facet of the offense, it gives them a sense that it is their offense. I have coached under guys who claimed to run the triple but called the dive, or called the pull, thereby making it a double option. I have also coached under guys who told their qb on passing plays who to throw it to. I do not want this, and I've never been a part of any success when we did it this way. That being said, I think there is a reason people run flexbone, I, split backs, shotgun spread, doublewing etc. They all have to work or they all wouldn't currently be being used!
So, I've been asked "what do you want to run offensively", and my answer has been something simple, adaptable, and that incorporates reads into the shceme for both the running and the passing game. Too liberal? Maybe, but I like room for creative expression, and I would never, ever be one to sit here and say "the double wing will never work", or "the flexbone is the best offense around". I think those are ignorant statements, just as on defense we choose to use the 43, but I could get it done out of the 50 or the 33 if I had to. Have I missed something in my coaching career (9 years-2 NAIA, 3 youth, 4 high school)? Am I being too vague on what I want? I'm not going to lie, if one of them came up to me with an Air Raid playbook that had everything I was asking for, I wouldn't be above giving him the job! Is this an incorrect way of going about finding an offensive coordinator? I would just like some insight as to what I might be doing wrong becuase my heart is telling me I'm doing the right thing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
