If you weren't a football coach, would you spend all your free time with your family?
I know many people who aren't football coaches that only see their kids for an hour or two a day. They're either working or they're doing stuff at home when they're not working instead of being in the house with their family. What's different about these football coaches getting home at 9 PM and other people who get home at 6 PM and spend the next couple hours working on things around the house?

If you want to win a ring, you'll have to put in the hours... It's super competitive here in Texas. A typical week for me, goes like this. Monday-Wednesday 6:00am arrive at field house 6:30-7:30 varsity video/ meetings 7:30-7:45 Varsity/ JV dress 7:45-9:15 varsity/ JV practice 9:15-9:30 varsity/ JV dress 9:30-9:45 varsity/ JV breakfast 9:45-1:50 teach 1 class/ have 1 conference 1:50-2:05 freshman dress 2:05- 3:50 freshman practice 3:50 freshman dress and go home 3:50-5:30 Varsity/ JV practice #2 5:30-5:45 Varsity/JV dress 5:45-6:15 video from morning workout 6:15 players go home 6:15-7:15 Coaches prepare practice schedules, scripts, scout books, etc. 7:15-9:00 coaches watch afternoon practice and make cut-ups for morning video. I lock up the field house and am home around 10:00 Thursday Same as Monday thru Wednesday except practices are walk thru. Sub varsity games are Thursday night. I will usually watch until around 6:30, then go scout one of our varsity opponents. We are in a very large district and have several teams that have to play on Thursday nights. Usually get done around 10:30, home by 11:00. Friday (Game Day) Arriveat 6:00am Go home around midnight Saturday Arrive at 7:00am Go home around 7:00pm Sunday Arrive at 2:00pm Go home ? Repeat this for 18 straight weeks. Welcome to Texas. Enjoy. [ Um, maybe I read your schedule wrong but so the kids only have 4 hours of class throughout the day? Also, where do you get the funding to feed your players breakfast everyday?

Each class period is 1:30 minutes long. Breakfast is served every day in the school throughout 1st period.

I have two siblings, brothers, and they cannot get out of the house fast enough to do almost anything else. One has a kid, the other has two. If they stay home, they have a honey do list and the nagging gets turned up a couple of notches.

Here is my current schedule- nothing close to the OP video:
6:00am - Arrive, handle administrative stuff. 720am - 2:35pm Teach 2:45pm - 4:00- Study Hall/Lifting + Pre-practice meetings/film 4:10-6pm - Practice - I have 3 programs (9/JV/Var) and we coach one side of the ball but all players in that position in the program (I have EVERY defensive back 9th-12th) 6pm-6:30pm- film/meet & wait for student pickup 7:30 Home 7:30-9:30pm - Practice plan next day through texting and google docs with other coaches 9:30pm-11pm - Film, plan, "entertain" the wife etc... This is my typical day in-season. We practice late because most of my coaches are elementary teachers and don't get out until 3:30 latest.
So, We're officially putting in about 5hrs a day- 2:45-7:30 football time Monday thru Thursday. Friday is gameday for us, I won't leave the school until around 10pm for a home game, 11pm-midnight if away.
Saturday is staff-only film, Sunday is gameplan via text/google docs etc UNLESS we need to meet, and typically we will meet at someone's house to do so.
=This is my 2nd year as HC and one thing I learned from many of you is DELEGATE and TRUST- let your coaches coach...give them responsibility! I haven't written a practice plan in the last 2 weeks because my OC/DC handle it. I have let go of the micromanagement thing and let them do their job. It has been a blessing.

PSS-
How long have you been grinding with this type of schedule? And if for long have you felt any burnout at all?

Ive been coaching for 23 years. Some years not as bad because travel wasn't as bad and some years worse because the demands were more. As far as burnout I haven't had felt any. I love what I do. I don't do it so much for myself as for the kids I coach.
Wife and I were laughing last week because we went 4 days without seeing each other awake. We were together Monday night then I didn't see her again until Friday night after the game.
My son is a junior, on the varsity, so we spend a lot of time together. Friday mornings the team has a breakfast with their fathers which is a special time for us.

It really varies quite a bit from program to program. Overall I think things are moving in a positive direction. You hear about a lot more staffs that are trying to maximize efficiency and spend less time twiddling thumbs in the field house. You hear some horror stories of other places all the time though, like the guy who tells his assistants they have to leave their cars parked at the field house all night after a loss, so if anybody in town drives by it will look they were there all night "gettin' it fixed!"...but like I said, the culture seems to be slowly changing across the state. Unfortunately there will always be guys that wear those working hours like a boy scout merit badge. It's a matter of pride for some.

I'm a family man, as are most people on my staff. Our close ones suffer enough- to waste time and stay out all hours of the night to "fix things" is an unnecessary shot to them. I may stay late, and if coaches want to do so they can, but it's not a requirement.

Not to mention a lot of guys exaggerate their hours quite a bit...
