Coaches,
Good evening and Happy Fourth! Thank you to all of you who have served to protect our way of life. You have my respect and gratitude.
Question: How do you prepare your players mentally for competition?
Please include any core routine and/or activities you use. Could you also leave your years of coaching experience in. I am looking for replies from coaches 5 years or fewer experience and 5 years and greater. I need to compare and contrast answers for a class.
Thank you for your time.
Respectfully, Coach K

Coach, I believe the biggest thing that we do is I do not allow any music in the weight room. I tell the players that it is a skill to focus and perform a task at hand without external motivation. I also tell them they will not have earbuds in their helmets to help them on a Friday night.
I honestly feel this has gone a long way in maturing our players ability to mentally prepare and execute. We lift 48 weeks out of the year, so there are plenty of opportunities to work on focusing and performing. I would say that our ability to focus and perform is one of our strengths.
I am 27 years old and going into my 10th year coaching, my 4th as a head coach.
If you need any additional info, let me know. Happy to help

The routine is the routine. It starts in the beginning of the week and continues through to game time. If it's big game we talk about in terms of what be different the coming week (TV reporters at practice, buzz in the community, etc). When we install on Monday its no different for the region patsy as it is for the region rival. The mental preparation you do Monday-Thursday goes so much further than the pregame. So far as pregame/game day we try to simulate the home routine in the road routine. Same meal, same meetings, same walk through, etc.

We attempted to cover most of the situations that they would face in game. We covered the down & distance situationals, going into the endzone, coming out of the endzone, etc.
