Our school had been putting the names up of athletes that rush or pass for 1000 yards for the past 10-15 years. I heard a kid a few days ago bragging about his name being up there in front of my QB, despite the fact that he never won a playoff game and my kid has already won 2 with his senior year to go. Honestly, I hate that individual stuff. This is only my 2nd year at the school as the HC, but would it be out of line to ask our administrators about taking those down?

You will piss off the townies and ghosts from your program. I would not take any down that were before your time, but you could certainly abstain from putting any of your kids up. That might send a similar message without angering all the 25-40 year old guys at your local watering hole who still wear their letterman's jackets.

Is this the hill you want to die on? It may be dumb but at least the school has some kind of tradition. 1000yds passing in 10 games hardly sounds impressive though.

Completely understand how that would tick off the townies. We as coaches have praised our OL and preached that whatever the RB gets is 99% a result of the OL. Our RBs do a great job praising them. It just seems like this contradicts what we are saying. Perhaps I could put the initials of the starting OL underneath the RBs that get 1000.

I was thinking the same thing 1000 yards passing it's not impressive. Rushing maybe, I don't mind the idea of putting past honors on display. As long as it's not a main focal point. At a former school we use to put pictures up of players that were all state and honors. Again that's just a small problem IMO, and not worth the trouble, as HC I'm sure you have tons more problems that need to be dealt with.

Yeah, ask Bill Callahan about breaking traditions that people care about.

We create posters for individual achievement too but they get hung in the locker room where only we can see. It's good for young guys to look up there and see success and say I want to be like that. However common areas where everyone sees the banners we put up team awards.

I coach OL, and I think this is dumb as hell
So you shouldn't care about it

How times have changed. I bet it wasn't all that long ago that 1000 yards rushers were MUCH more common at the HS level than 1000 yard passers.

Just start adding the team year you have a player do that. When someone asks why, say it was a team effort.

Wait, banners for 1,000 yards passing!?!?
I used to be at a wing t school the past few years and we never made a big deal about a 1,000 yard passer much less (or more) a 1,000 yd rusher.....
Then again, if we had constantly had a 1,000 yards passing in wing t, tubby and dave would be cursing us somewhere up there in the clouds...

Keep it. It's good for kids to see past accomplishments. What about adding banners for winning teams? Conference champs, playoff runs, etc? Keep the past practice and add your stamp to it.

Not really. Delaware under Tubby threw the ball a fair amount, enough to put three QBs (Scott Brunner, Jeff Komlo, and Rich Gannon) in The League.
Like Coach Yeoman said about his Offense, the Veer: 'We're going to run, run, run until they put enough people up there to stop it, and then we're going to throw, throw, throw."

Pat O'Brien did it better.

Start putting up banners for 1000 yard blockers

Don't put the banner up until after the player's senior football season.
