So I coach a community 'all-star' team and we have a grade 9 kid that played for us last year who received upwards of 50% of snaps but wasn't a starter.
He is not playing because he was not a starter and felt it was unfair that he wasn't a starter.
He's a linebacker for which we had 2 LB's that were grade 10's and better than him (because of experience) and another was a grade 9 who was better than this player was.
He uses the fact that he was a starter and captain on his HS team THIS past season (after our summer season) as proof that he should have been a starter for us last season.
Is it me or do these kids live in an altered reality these days?

The same thing was happening when I played, and really as long as I've been watching high school football. It might be more common now though.

Seen it happening more and more now. Especially when a younger player starts over an older one I see older guys give up.
This happens in other sports besides football too.

How's this for a player thinking he's entitled....This is baseball, buts it one of our football players. He's a sophmore, who last year as a freshmen on JV struggled more times than not pitching, and his hitting might as well been non existent. So he's a swing player this year and didn't get to pitch in our 1 varsity scrimmage or first game. Weather was brutal here to start the season so evaluations have been tough. The kid sends me an email saying how insulted he was that he didn't get his chance to pitch yet after 1 gamw, and when he was schedule to start a JV game he was insulted again. This kid has proven nothing, is only a sophmore, and he's pissed he's not a main varsity contributor?

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using proboards I don't want to assume what's happened or has been said in this and original situation, but what has always worked best for me is honesty. If a player asks me if he's going to start and I know he won't, I say "Nope, you won't start." Then I proceed to tell him why he won't start (slower, less aggressive, bad tackler, etc.) and tell him the ball is in his court. He can either pout about it to Mama or he can work his @ss off to get better at it. I'd say about 50% of the time the kid has not put in any more effort than before and not seen any more playing time than before, but I have also not heard complaining from players or parents. Hard to argue with the truth, although a couple times a kid still won't believe me so I've set up competitions or used film to "prove" he is not as good.

We are facing something similar with our 8th and 9th graders this year. We are a small community and they only play other small area communities in the area (ones we don't play or those smaller teams later combine to make a JV team) at the rec ball level and they have won their championship the last three years in their age group. Well they have now moved up and things aren't quite as easy due to numerous factors, mainly the competition is enormously tougher.
so we have a number of them that are not going to play because "football isn't fun anymore because we have to work too hard and its harder now than in rec ball."

then let them go, i've coached to long to worry about the ones that come up with excuses, we got a kid not coming out because he didn't get in the last game, probably not going to get into many games,

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using proboards I had a senior give his uniform to a freshman to deliver to me because I DH'ed for him in one game. Little chicken $hits locker is right next to my room and he still has yet to say anything. Who cares if they quit because I don't respect kids like that anyway

At some point we have to assume it's more than what it seems. He probably was looking for an excuse to get out of dodge. Any way to quit without quitting. He's going to tell Uncle Rico stories for the next 50 years about coaching giving him a chance.
