Yesterday the HC told me I had been promoted to DC. Do you have any advice for a first year coordinator? Game Planning, Practice, play calling, adjustments...?

Do you have a system in-place, or are you expected to run your own defense? How many practices do you have before the first game/scrimmage?

Watch film!!!! I think that the difference between a great DC and an Average DC is how well you can learn tendencies and get inside the OC's head.
Get a system, teach alignment, reads, and responsibilities.
Install the basics and rep the heck out of it against the stuff from your first opponent.

Yes it is on the HS level. I have been there a year, and we will run the same scheme we did last year. It's a system I know well. We have two more weeks of summer practice before we start preparing for the season. Do ya'll try to have all the playbook in before the first game, or put in the basics and then add to it? What are some main things you look for in film?

I put in the whole package, since my defensive package is a very small one. Then I just have to go over adjustments to certain formations...
As far as film goes...find out which 2 Offensive Lineman they will run between in "NEED downs", and run/pass tendencies in each of their formations. If they will run the ball 80% out of a certain formation, then you can gamble a little more by bringing safeties up, and playing cover 0, because they will only pass about 2 out of 10 times.

this will sound a bit simple but I think there is a lot of truth in it, all the x and o stuff is great, but if you dont tackle well, dont run to the ball well, and if you are not solid at the fundamentals at each position the x and O stuff doesnt matter. Make sure you team is outstanding at tackling and you will be in good shape.
