Coaches,
For those of you in the Gun, how do you communicate the cadence to your offense when you go from a silent count (leg kick, hand clap) to a verbal count ("Set Go"), in the huddle. Do any of you even do that? I was just thinking about different tempos but can't figure out how to call it in the huddle. Code words, etc.

We use a verbal cadence exclusively. We do change the snap count.

When we use to go with a silent gun cadence, we would wiggle the thumbs, signalling the center to snap the ball on his own (rather than a leg kick). Worked well...

We are verbal exclusively. Cadence is always "Set Hut", and we always go "on one." To call an audible (or dummy cadence), QB says whatever he wants before "Set." (Had a flambouyant QB this year; dummy calls got pretty interesting.) In our "Regular" tempo, he'll call "Set Hut" once, then look to sideline for possible play change; then second "Set Hut" is live. If in "Rabbit" tempo, D is jumping the snap, we'll call a "freeze" count, then audible to a live play.

Spartancoach,
So your "Tempo" call would dictate your cadence?

Anytime the ball was snapped for us in any shotgun formation, we left it to the center to snap it.
QB goes through reads, makes any needed communications to offense
Candence was "SET"
After that, the C could snap the ball when he was ready.
Worked pretty well

what we do is unique but very effective. Center handles the count unless Qb audibles the play then he takes it. All pass plays on first sound. All runs to the right are on two and runs to the left are on three

So the center is the one actually calling out the cadence? No one has picked up on your system?

I was toying with that idea of allowing my center to finish the cadence, I picked it up from this teams Spring pract. the other night. what it is is this it's all no Huddle stuff and on all the plays that aren't with some sort of motion or shift the center makes the Go!! call after the QB gives him the signal ( similar to what Oregon does with the 1 finger pointing down) and the center calls out the Def. front and protection then looks for the indicator and bang!! but on the motioned plays the QB goes through the Cadence etc. and then signals to the center same way.

So the center is the one actually calling out the cadence? No one has picked up on your system? How would anyone pick up on it? The other team doesn't know what is coming out of the centers mouth. When it is on three it is a hard count (hut, hut-hut).

Spartan coach, are you calling the tempo in the huddle. Also, what about when you motion. What is your cadence like.

I prefer the traditional verbal cadence at the HS level. Rarely, if ever do we play somehwere where the noise is so bad that the players can't hear.

If you guys are no huddle, how are do you signal in the snap count? Or is it always one and leave it to the QB to change? If so how does he communicate the change?

If the ball isn't snapped on the first sound, it's a run. We don't tell the other team what our cadence is so they are not picking up on it. They don't know what you know already. Works really well. You dont have to waste verbage becuase the snap count is known by everyone just by the play call. Motions are timed up by the QB. The center still looks for a signal from the QB to start his cadence.

Seems like anyone with half a brain would be able to figure that out.

We run a similar system to hitstik. Have been doing it for 10 years. 5 State Titles. All you need to do is change it up once if you think the defense is on to you. That creates unsureness and becomes your advantage. It's a lot harder to recognize then you think.
Odds are you will not hear any cadence from film study and it will be very hard to hear the cadence from the stands if you are scouting.
Also hitstik makes a great point. He just told you his system. I seriously doubt you would be looking for that. Actually by asking the questiions that you did regarding the system you made it obvious that you wouldn't.

Spartan coach, are you calling the tempo in the huddle. Also, what about when you motion. What is your cadence like. No huddle to call tempo; either called before the series or the QB will simply call out the tempo at the line before beginning cadence. Motion by QB leg kick. Straight cadence: "Set Hut" Ex. with audible: Call audible indicator, can be "Check", "gold", anything really. Then audible, we use mostly colleges/pro teams and mascots for left and right, then cadence. So, "Gold, Black Bear, Gold Black Bear (which is Midline Right), Set Hut" Ex. with dummy call: Usually use weather for dummy calls. So, "Hurricane 221, Hurricane 221, Set Hut"
