I have heard many coaches comment about the lack of support from admin. As a varsity head coach, what do you expect your admin to do? Hiring asst. coach as teachers? FB/athletics class? Lightened teaching schedule? Supporting coaches in terms of play calling and who starts?
I don't want to turn this into a whine post, just to get some different ideas.
Some schools give filmers aide credit...
There are so many things I don't even think to ask from admin. What should I ask for?
I know one fellow head coach who comes in each year with a list of three things for admin to do or else...

Not allowing parental complaints to get any further than a phone call to the admin. Good administrators understand that some parents just don't get it, and the admin. shuts those parents down and supports the coaches.

admin who preaches proper chain of command and do not follow the chain of command.
If a parent calls the the admin the first question asked should be: "Have you talked to the coach yet?" If the answer is NO, then it should be the end of the conversation.

Last school I worked at had outstanding administrative backing. We had a sticky issue with an old coach's (25 yr exp) contract not getting renewed due to loyalty issues (ran his mouth in the community) Our principal played golf regularly with the guy and we were sure that it would be an issue. He said "Coach: you hire-you fire...I support your decision no matter what."

Hiring asst. coach as teachers? - It helps to have people on staff who can help. Too bad, our school doesn't do it, despite promises to make it happen.
FB/athletics class? - Our school got rid of it. I think that is annoying. The reason they got rid of it was because the PE teachers didn't like monitoring the weight room. Instead of reprimanding the lazy teachers (in this case teacher) they just got rid of it.
Lightened teaching schedule? - I would love an extra hour off, but I knew what I was getting into with that.
Supporting coaches in terms of play calling and who starts? - Our administration supports us on this. But, they allow the complainers to much face-time. They need to send their butts home before they spread it all over the school.

a good administration is one that will leave the coaches alone to do their job, but at the same time will get you what you need to get better - coaching clinics, weight room equipment, football equipment, etc...

I think one has to decide what administration is supporting you. Is it the Athletic director or the principals.
who do you answer to? as a teacher you answer to the prinicpal. as a coach you answer to the ad. too many head prinicpals are one ego trips(that is why they became principals) thinking they are incharge.
i had to tell a head prinicpal one time which hat am I wearing. if you are talking to me about a football issue we need to go to the ad or are we talking about a class room school issue. she was offended by this(she had no power). I answer to the ad for football issues not the head prinicpal.

I don't have another hour or four to further expound on their weaknesses.

A spine is a good beginning.
Also the ability to tell you the truth.
I don't expect admins to be all football all the time, but I will say it is nice to work for ones that realize what it takes to coach the sport and will help you out once and awhile with parents, duties, etc.

So, if the buck stops at the AD (rather than a principal), what support do you want from your AD?

So, if the buck stops at the AD (rather than a principal), what support do you want from your AD? in texas 99% of the HFC are the AD but if I was at a place as just HFC the AD had better do the same damn thing

Here is my defenition of admin support. Principal is a former football coach, AD is a former head football coach (also my father-in-law, but that is a seperate issue) they fully support anything our HC does as long as it is within the loosely written athletic code. AD has been known to kick complaining fans out of the game, even ban them from coming back. As far as complaints usually only the HC hears those with some realm of reasonablizm, I hear a few more because of my relationship with the AD. Other than those legit concerns, we hear very little from the community. Admin's back us all the way to the fishing boat.

I believe class schedule is very important.
We as football coaches are expected to moniter grades and behaivor (ever notice if a player is not doing well acadamically or with behaivor it is the coaches fault), devise gameplans, be involved in the community, work long hours for hardly no pay (that's okay becasue we have the passion for the game), deal with irate parents because their son did not play enough even though you have not had a losing season in six years, and than be expected to have world class lesson plans.
So the first thing that I discuss with my administrators every year in May is my class schedule the following year. I have first, last, and a period right after lunch off and teach one less class than my professional peers. Most faculty members have no problem with that because they understand the amount of time I put into football and the school community and they respect it!! After all, some members of my department come in for school at 7:45 (I'm there at 6:00 before janitors because I have a key) and are out the door at 2:30 (I leave 6:30 during season 5:00 out of season) before the kids even get to their lockers.
