hey guys
This year, our first game is on a Friday night (August 28). Typically after a game, we would bring the kids in at 8am, do a team run, watch film and send them home.
Our second game this year is that following Thursday (September 3rd) at home for our home opener.
In my coaching or playing career, I have never had to deal with a shortened week before. I have had to coach or play in Saturday games but never on a Thursday. My question for you all is:
Would you bring the kids in on a Sunday (the 29th) to keep the same weekly routine or just start practice Monday-Tuesday- then do a Wednesday Run-Thru then go play Thursday?
Also, with us playing on a Thursday, we would watch film and do some on field work that Friday. Would you give them Saturday & Sunday off or utilize the extra day of practice for our week 3 opponent (who happens to be a flexbone triple option team).
Looking forward to hearing your opinions!

Do you mean Saturday the 29th?
I'd stay stick to your same weekly routine as much as possible.

We faced this situation twice last year, gave kids off on Saturday and brought them in on Sunday at 3, to do walk-thru and introduce game plan and made Monday like a Tuesday practice and Tuesday like a Wenesday practice, work out nicely for us, we won both Thursday night games

We had that this season. It was not ideal. To make matters worse we also had our JV game on Wednesday night. We tried to keep the week as normal as possible but the reality of losing a day during the week did not help. It was also our first week of school too so that on top of everything else stunk.

I deal with this type of situation all the time. However - it's usually a Saturday to Friday deal. Sunday's are always off for us. Our schedule would look like: Sunday off Monday - Lift / Film / Game Plan Tuesday - Practice Wednesday - Practice Thursday - Pre-grame In your situation - I would keep your Saturday schedule the same and practice Monday & Tuesday with a Wednesday walk through. Then the following week - I would do your film work on Friday and give them Sat & Sunday off. I've never found preparing for an option team difficult in terms of A & A - it's just you can't replicate the speed in which the offense plays. So an extra day of practice, I don't think, we be of any real value. Keep the kids fresh.

Played many Thrs night games due to stadium/ref aviability at our last school. We would bring them in Sunday and do our Monday stuff so every day would be bumped up a day as far as practice scheduling. We would give them a long weekend and let them rest since its a bit of a grind doing the Thrs night game. Just start over the next Monday. I think once we had a Sat game then Thrs game. That sucked as you can tell our AD at that school had no clue.

Want to have some real scheduling fun? I coached in a league where there were 5 teams in the city and 1 stadium that was shared by all 5 teams. All the teams were in the league. So you could get a game on Thursday, Friday, Saturday afternoon, or Saturday night. I had one season where we had a Friday-Saturday night-Thursday-Saturday afternoon run. Talk about honking up any kind of schedule. It's rare that it happens like that, but there always seems to be that one team that gets the short stick on the schedule.

I coached in a league where one season, due to an odd number of teams, once a season we played on Friday then played the following Tuesday! In other cases, it was having Friday off, but then playing Tuesday AND Saturday of the following week.
In answer to the question, though, I would consider Sunday the "Monday" of game week and then stay as routine as normal. I would also bring the kids in the Friday after the Thursday game, but then give them Saturday and Sunday off so the get that extra day back, so to speak.

We traditionally played Saturdays but lately have been moving to a more Friday-driven schedule, which is a pain. One team realized that they could make a lot of money moving to Friday night (host gets to decide gametime) but that caused a short week for everyone playing them so that meant everyone wanted to move their home games to Friday to protect themselves from the knock-on effects, so we have a hash of short and long weeks. What we do is base everything off gameday, so we figure out our four practices backwards from there and either we have 0, 1, or 2 days off.

I think the key is having as quick a recovery for your kids as possible. Having Saturday run/treatment is a must.
The shortened week learning wise can be handled as you prep in the preseason. If you have the film for the following week, you could keep the kids a little longer on Saturday. You could go a little longer on Mon/Tues if you need the time on task. Of course you could take the Sunday to work.
The learning/teaching component is the least of my worry. Make sure the kids physically have recovered.

We have been in this situation a couple of times. We bring the kids in on Saturday to lift and watch video of Friday's game; we then meet to discuss game plan (so we can install on Monday). Monday is a regular Monday for us, and Tuesday is a regular Tuesday(as far as times, with no contact). Wednesday is a semi walk-through day with no contact or full speed. It's longer than a normal pregame practice, but not as long as a regular practice.

We deal with this 2 to 3 times a year since we share a stadium with the other high schools in town. We don't change our routine. Practice is the same Monday through Wednesday, with a short special team mock game at the end of Wednesday's practice. We two platoon so that does help.
In Iowa we get used to short weeks especially at playoff time. End the regular season on Friday followed by round 1 on Wednesday, round 2 on Monday, round 3 on Friday, then finally back on a normal schedule the last two weeks.

I always find it funny in these threads when people post their playoff schedules where it's like 3 games in 7 days or something crazy but then state associations pass all kinds of "safety" regulations about practice time, contact, heat acclimation, etc...

The thing that's crazy about the Iowa structure is that it really isn't done so shave time off the end of the season, at least the way I understand it. It's done to ensure all the semifinal and final games can be played at Northern Iowa, which has a domed stadium.

Unfortunately we have to deal with this fairly often. We have 3 Thursday games this upcoming season and had 2 this season. In Texas it's illegal to bring the kids in to do anything on a Sunday, so the Sunday thru Wednesday schedule that you mentioned wouldn't work for us. We have our regular Monday and Tuesday workouts, but because our JV teams will play Wednesday at 5:00, we will have a short offensive practice Wednesday morning and then a defensive and special teams practice during our athletic period and shortly after school. We will have our normal Friday night itinerary throughout Thursdays game day. We lift, run, and video the kids on Friday during athletic period and after school, then we go scout one of the Friday night games in our district. Normal work week on Saturday and Sunday for coaches.
