I've got some silly questions.
What are you supposed to bring with to a clinic? Are laptops allowed? Pen and paper only? I'm new to these things. Also, I'm no where near as smart as all of you and I'm pretty sure I'll be the one that knows the least at the clinics I plan on attending and that makes me nervous. Is there any chance that I could be asked questions by the clinic speaker? Are jeans and a t-shirt acceptable to wear? Thanks for the responses in advance.

I can pretty much guarantee that, no matter how little you know, you won't be the dumbest guy there. Just keep your mouth shut and your ears open. I doubt that they'll ask questions. Laptops usually aren't allowed. Nobody cares what you wear but generally polos are accepted over t shorts. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

I just bring a pen and a notebook. I don't know of any rules against laptops, but I'm not sure on that one. It may depend on the clinic.
If you're sitting up front or next to the aisle, the speaker may ask you to stand up so that he can use you to demonstrate a technique. But as far as being put on the spot and asked a question, no, that's not likely to happen.
There's no dress code that I've ever seen. I like to wear a nice coaching shirt and khakis, though, and look professional. Most people wear some kind of school attire.

For attire you can't beat cargo shorts with school colored camo pattern and a cut off t shirt, preferably with a macho logo of some kind.

Your there representing your team, wear team apparel...
Listen, learn and converse with other coaches.. Great way to make connections in the coaching world I have always found..
Take a pen and pad .. Ita still the best and quickest way to scribble/draw quickly
Lastly... Enjoy it!

I would not worry about what you wear or your knowledge level. Because there will always always always be someone who stands out in both areas. There should be a web site "peopleofcoachesclinics.com" like people of Walmart with some of the stuff you are bound to see. Also sometimes it's better to be seen and not heard like the guy who asked Ferentz from Iowa during a talk " What's that circle on the film coach?" "The guy I want to highlight on the play." "What do you mean coach?" "The guy I want you to watch on the play." "Wow how did y'all know during practice he was the one to put the circle on?" "Our video guy did it on the film". "I don't understand that coach"

Everyone is there to learn so don't worry about prior knowledge. I usually go jeans or Kahkis on a Friday with a polo, and sweats on Saturday.....thinking about glazier this weekend. But really who cares. Enjoy yourself, and learn ball.
I see guys with laptops and tablets all the time.

I usually use a tablet and a stylus to handwrite my notes and use the camera to take pictures of diagrams if he's going to fast to draw them myself.
I usually wear a team t-shirt, but a nice one in good condition. Sometimes a polo but ours aren't particularly nice. Jeans or khakis, shorts are not an option given the weather.
I rarely see coaches venture outside of team shirt+jeans/khakis/shorts. I don't think I've ever seen gym shorts or a cutoff T.

I've never had much success hand writing with a stylus on my iPad. Maybe I need to do something different with it? Maybe you have a different tablet.

But i was able to at least detail it enough in short hand so that i can draw later.

I got an iPad for Christmas and have been looking into the cases with keyboards for this very reason. I'd like to be able to use it at clinics instead of using a bulky notebook. And it's already typed up for me.

The brand name is Newtrent Pretty sure I got it on amazon a couple years ago It works well It's a hard case that opens and pivots Ipad itself sticks into a groove on it to stay opened I will sit in a row where no one is in front of me I'll turn the chair in front of my around like a small desk and it works perfect Easier than putting it on my lap

I use an iPad with a Zagg keyboard/case. AWESOME for everything. 2/3 of our program runs on it. For drawing I use a cheap stylus (bought in bulk for pennies off EBay). It's all about spending 99 cents on a decent app that has the ability to put a "dead zone" at the bottom so you can rest your hand on the screen.

On my Ipad I use the Pages app to take notes and I use CoachMe to draw stuff up. I screen grab it to save it. Works well for me.

I'm partial to Notability. Does this allow you to draw and type on the same page? I want something that will allow me to type notes and draw plays all on the same page, then I can just upload it to my computer and it's all done for me.

My whole thinking is that I would already have it typed up, saving me the time of going back and typing it up after the clinic. I like to try and store all of my clinic notes on my computer so I can organize them a little better and have them all in one place.

I think so. I can audio record a session if the coach is okay with it. I can take a picture of a diagram shown on an overhead. I can take a video of a technique demonstration. I can type up all my notes as I'm taking them and then pass them on to staff members that were at other sessions. It sounds a lot more complicated than it is when you start talking about software and hardware.

The shorthand that I use to get the info down quickly requires me to rewrite it anyway. I also find that rewriting it reinforces the learning.

Yes, you can easily switch from pencil to keyboard to camera, and you can sync an audio recording to the notes. My favourite features are the ability to take pictures of diagrams from those coaches who flash them up too fast to draw (esp. option coaches who are very front dependent with lots of different adjustments). If not for that feature I'd probably be better off with a pen.

If there are any extra social events be sure to drink as much alcohol as possible and pound your chest about your playing days, while bashing other coaches and their style of football. You will definitely make the "all-clinic" team.

There isnt really a dress code, but I would definitely wear khakis with a tucked in polo. You're going to meet coaches and you may be interviewing with them in the future, do you want to be the guy in jeans and a t shirt? You may know the least, but you can easily be better dressed than most of the people around you. Not talking about wearing a suit, but look like a guy people want to hire.
The first clinic I went to I wore jeans and a long sleeve t shirt, and I can't believe I did that now.

You never know who you might bump into at a clinic. It doesn't hurt to look professional.
