I'm doing a little research, and I know there was a previous thread that touched on the subject, but those more more enforcement related responses.
I'm just interested in whether other coaches' schools and/or districts have set academic requirements for students that are above the benchmark that their respective state sets for eligibility.
1. Are standards set by coaches of individual teams or does one set of standards apply to every athlete in the school and/or district
2. What are the specific academic standards if they are higher that the states' requirements?
Thanks a lot for any responses.

Our school district requires all student-athletes to carry a 2.0 GPA. There is no GPA requirement in our state.

One set of standards applies to every athlete.

2.0 GPA overall...meaning anytime it dips under a 2.0 throughout the 8 academic semesters the student-athlete is automatically ineligible. With that the school requires passing 6/7 classes each semester...roughly 3 credits.

To answer #1, We follow state guidelines, which is 2 F's and you're off the team. If we were to apply a stricter standard it would be the AD and principal adopting a policy. I don't think it's a good idea for coaches and individual teams to set their own. A lot of problems could arise because of it. If you want stricter standards it has to be done by administrators and it has to be school wide among all sports teams. 2. As stated a couple times. Carrying a 2.0 GPA or higher is the most common I've heard of. I've also seen no F's or you're done.

I'm stricter than our other sports. I require a 2.25. Our state requires a 2.0 (our other sports follow this). Reason is it's hard to go 2.25 to under a 2.0 in a semester, but if you're 2.06 or something, you can easily fall under and would miss our last game/playoffs.
Anyone with a D or F in a class (not an individual grade) in-season has a separate study hall, they also eat the team meal in a study hall instead of watching a movie with everyone else. Needless to say our GPA rose from under a 3.0 to 3.4 unweighted. We're a college prep school and our athletes need to feel that pressure too.

Thanks for the responses. spos21ram - absolutely it will have to come from administration. In the state we are in, you can essentially fail 2 courses per semester and still be eligible. I am of the opinion that if you're failing 2 classes, you have no business being afforded the privilege of participating in athletics, so I've been charged by AD to try and come up suggestions for a higher, but still attainable standard. Seems like 2.0 is the most common.

I feel anything less than a B and you're setting a kid up for failure.

District Standard is underclassmen must be passing 5 classes, 2 of which are majors (math/ELA/Sci/SS). Seniors must be passing all classes necessary for graduation. 2. Our team standard for eligibility is the same as our district standards. However, anyone with an F or D on their midterm will attend study hall each day. I have a offseason point system and included in that is an academic point coefficient (A=4pts, B=3pts, C=1pt, D=0, F=-4pts) that, if the student falls below a certain total of points during the offseason they "enroll" in the study hall from Day 1 the following season.

Everything for us is determined by school districts.
To be eligible for academics, you need to have a 2.0 and no more than 1 F from the previous quarter.

EVERY SIX WEEKS....
to be eligible in our district: 2.0 nonweighted GPA passing 25 credits (5 classes) no more than one F (2 F's regardless of GPA is ineligible)
to be eligible at or school: all of the above PLUS 3 or less class cuts per 6 week grading period 8 or less tardies per 6 week grading period
We are the only school in the world that I know of who has a truancy policy - every year I lose kids to it....

Our board of education sets the policy. Overall GPA does not matter. If you are failing 2 classes (65 is passing) you are ineligible. This policy is for ALL sports at my school here in NY...So you can get 2 60's and still have a 75-85 overall average, but you would still be ineligible.
