Has anyone here had success trying to recruit track kids on their teams?
I've never done it and I know fast doesn't generally translate into a good football player bit for my JV summer rep team I'm thinking about trying to recruit a couple track kids as DB's to see how it pans out.
Thoughts on approaches to take?
Thanks

Thoughts on approaches to take? Thanks I would try to get as many players out as the program can handle, especially if they have ability. But regardless of speed, size, strength, etc., there is one thing I have learned about kids: You never really know what you have in a player until he's in pads. We have all had players with great measureables who weren't worth a damn. And we've all had players with limited ability who (through intensity and/or intelligence) turned out to be solid players. But these kids you're talking about can't help you if they aren't out on the field and you won't know if you have something with any of them if they don't suit up, so I say get 'em if you can and find out.

The one sales pitch I've used that has had success is "come out for spring and see how you like it. It's less than a month." We've had kids from other sports agree that sounds worth it. Then at the end of spring if they're clearly not a football player, they know it and I know not to bother them again.

Has anyone here had success trying to recruit track kids on their teams? Thoughts on approaches to take? Thanks We insist on ALL of our football players participate on the track team. They don't necessarily have to compete at meets but they need to come out and get better. Some of them aways want to go to meets.

We have all our football players not playing any other spring sports running track. If they choose not to run track they will find themselves in the doghouse for sure.

Never had this issue actually Normally track wants our FB kids I generally prefer FB kids to do track but our program has been bad here for a while. 2 years ago I tried making all FB kids do track but it didn't work out great and I told them they could continue just lifting with me. If it was a little more organized here Id be a little more supportive
I've probably only seen 1 kid in 9 years who was really fast, who didn't already play football
Each year he "talked" about coming out But I never put any stock into it. He was tiny, and you could just see the fear in his eyes
Would've probably been a stud in PE flag football tho

Maybe this is an issue at bigger schools where there are more athletes, but I've honestly never seen a track kid who does track only and no other sports that would strike me as a good football player and someone I'd need to recruit onto my team.

Thanks for the thoughts fellas.
Just a point I'm a rep coach for a summer program. We're not affiliated with any particular school.

Rep basically means or is supposed to mean a regional/area all-star team. Our team plays in the summer and is made up of players from the area most of whom come from the various high schools though we are not affiliated with any specific school. Didn't realize you folks weren't familiar with the concept of a 'rep' team.

I'm the sprint/jump coach for our track team in indoor and outdoor track. My players that do not wrestle, ski, or play basketball do track in the winter. My players that do not play baseball in the spring do track. They all learn to run with better technique, but even more importantly, they can continue to work out without the limitation of the other sports. We do not share in the myth that lifting harms performance in track and field as many of the basketball, wrestling, and baseball coaches attempt to portray.
