For those of you that practice on your game field, I was thinking there should be a way to use our play clocks as segment timers maybe even the scoreboard to show time remaining in the segment. Anybody already do this?

Anybody already do this? Have done it before; only works if the other coaches (and HC) are organized; otherwise its a clusterF. Also, be sure to account for transition time and time for the clock to reset.

We already use a segment timer, but it's small and you can't see it from everywhere on the field. Plus it only shows the segment, not how much time remains in the segment. Just thinking the scoreboard and play clock might be better.

Our scoreboard has a hand held wireless remote that I can control from the field. It is very nice, and it there is never a doubt as to where we are during our practice.

I did this at my last school that has great facilities. We had our equipment guy run the clock and we used home score as period. It does take organization but we always made written schedules on Sunday at meeting so we were always on the same page. We actually had an iPod to play music during practice as well. I made sure everything was set up daily before practice. I tried to do this at my current school but the facilities are terrible and segment timers are just too expensive.

We've been through a few iterations to find what works best for us. We have 3 different segments of practice (ST, O, D) and so we reset the scoreboard clock 3 times during practice (on our game field). Each time it countsdown the total time for the segment and then on the practice plan I put the "clock time" that we will transition from Indy, Group, Team, etc. If we have 10 min of Indy O, 15 min of Pass Skelly, and 20 min of Team we would set the clock for 45:00 and then the practice plan would have 45:00 next to Indy, 35:00 next to Pass Skelly, and 20:00 next to Team. Once the clock hits 0 we reset it for the next segment. I know that there are a lot of ways to do it but this has been a game changer for us.

I think spectrum or one of the scoreboard people should have a program so that the segment number shows on the play clock (Delay of game clock) and the segment time shows on the game clock.
We do 5 min segments, up to 24 (usually 18-22) game clock would be counting down time remaining in that particular segment, when it hits zero, horn buzzes and segment (play clock) changes & time starts over on the game clock.
With all the apps people write nowadays I wouldn't think that would be difficult.
Plus your bulbs/lights would burn out faster so they could make money coming out to repair them$$

We just look at our phones. Everyone is on the same time. I've never liked the idea of a giant clock counting down the practice. When I played in college we had a timer it just made the periods last forever.
