Ok here's the deal or hc bolted. Never planned the football banquet. I am in the process of handling it. My question? Do I use the same awards as the previous head coach. Or do I go with my own We have a rattlesnake award. Which is one he gave last season but I have no idea what the qualifications are to earn it.

Without knowing many details, I'd say go with your own.

Are you the new HC or just an assistant they have deemed to stick with this task? If you are the new HC I'd go with my own. If you are the interim and they have no intention of making you the HC, I'd tell them to get bent on the whole deal.

If you are an assistant and I are going to be treated as such, act as such.

Well I have applied. No clue how it will play out. The players want me. Hc just left wed. Told me on Tuesday. He told everyone I would handle everything. I haven't been told anything. Plan on staying either way. There are only 2 full time football paid assistants. There wasn't any on staff to this school. Qb club has contacted me and told me to get all things setup with a price and they would write check. I am handing all hc responsibilities with the interim or the full title.

One idea would be to nail this thing and show yourself as somebody who really wants the job. Go the extra mile to clean things up after the previous guy. If I was "forced" into doing this...I would take this angle. If I gave a rats ass I wouldn't be touching this commitment.

That's my approach. Just undecided on how to do the awards. Going to get stuff for seniors but how do I handle the rest

To answer your original question, I would probably come up with my own awards since you do not know all of the criteria to the awards that already have existed.
This probably does not come up often, but we had a mom throw a fit one year because her kid did not receive a varsity letter. And I mean really threw a fit. She was after people's jobs over this. Fortunately, we had clear criteria that her son clearly did not meet, so nothing ever really came of it.

Stick with what you know (the awards you understand), get the job done. Whether or not you plan on staying man up (which your HC did not do), and finish the season off right. We coach for the kids, give them what they deserve.

I would make sure to budget everything with the boosters. You may have a great banquet but get ran out of town. We feed 120 people at $11 a person. Some places only serve dessert. Each kid gets a highlight DVD, all pictures on a DVD, we frame pictures and posters, bars and pens, District Champ patch, and each kid gets a plaque for playing and if a special award we place it on the same plaque. We have a few that get two plaques because of the number of awards. It is now expected at my current school but I have worked at places with a lot of money and the entire banquet cost less than $100.

Quick and painless would be my suggestion. Give out the usual awards, thank the kids and the parents. Get them out the door within an hour.

Use it as an opportunity to impress and show you are capable of handling the event as a HC
Impress in an understated way

Get together with whatever remains of the staff (which doesn't seem like much) and work out what you want to give. The other guy's gone, so what he gave is of little importance (unless you're at a place where they've given the same awards forever no matter who the coach is--in which case, I'd just stick with those). The bottom line is, do the thing right. It's for the players. It doesn't matter who the next HC will be, those kids deserve this to be done to the best of your ability.
