How many of you guys do this ? Have a grade behavior check on a weekly basis? Other than extra paper, what are the Pros/Cons of this?

I believe that once a week is a little much to be completely honest. I also believe checking on kids that don't need to be checked on is overkill, and unnecessary. As a head coach, I maintain a watch over my freshmen, every two weeks. I coordinate it with the school calendar, so I'm actually not the one sending out paperwork every time. For instance, I look at the first school wide progress report, and back up from there by two weeks. Once that frosh year is over, I'll maintain a check on my sophs, juniors, seniors every two weeks ONLY if they are under a 2.5. Otherwise, just check their grades at regular school reporting times.
My form looks like this
YOUR NAME TEACHER/FACILITATOR PERIOD CLASS SIGNATURE GRADE POINTS FIRST PERIOD SECOND PERIOD THIRD PERIOD FOURTH PERIOD FIFTH PERIOD SIXTH PERIOD SEVENTH PERIOD Total Points Classes To determine GPA - G.P.A. A = 4 points, B = 3 points, C = 2 points, D = 1 point, F = 0 points Total up the points you have and divide by how many classes you have. This will give you your current GPA. PARENTS SIGNATURE - _________________________ I understand that Coach ____________ is proactively monitoring the grades of my child.

Very similar to coachfore, I think e check once every midterm; which for us is 4.5 weeks. Kids are given the sheets and they must be returned by the next day. If someone forgets our losers theirs the whole team faces BIG consequences. At a previous teaching/coaching stop, I took it upon myself to check my linesmen's grades at the 9 weeks. Train being that in Indiana the state tournament starts right around then and at least at the schools I have been the policy is that 9 weeks grades are the only headed that make you ineligible. I would normally check around week 7 just so if there was a kid struggling he could have the chance to do something about it. With the advancements in electronic and online grading, I'm sure some systems may allow you as a coach to have real time access to your players grades, provided that teachers are caught up of course.

We are beginning to check every three weeks on our kids. Our athletic secretary checks our kids and prints off grades and missing assignments. We only do this for classes with grades less than a B

Our school sends out a list every Wednesday of every student who is failing a class because we have Wednesday study tables that are mandatory for those students. Our HC works in our middle school, so for the high school players, I take it upon myself to contact players who are failing classes. I agree with the above point on overkill, however. I don't normally go out of my way to contact a player unless it's a very low grade or we're getting close to a grading period ending. The way our school is structured and with the way we're targeting bad grades as a whole school, any student getting an F is already getting a talking to from multiple sources.

I got this idea from a Coach in Ohio...I had one coaching stipend open and could use it however I wanted to. We already had enough coaches on both sides of the ball (8 total coaches). So, instead of using a stipend on a coach that would basically serve as an assistant to some position coach, I took the stipend and split it into two stipends. I hired and English Teacher and a Math Teacher within out building to serve as full-time Academic Coaches for our Team. They split our JV & Varsity Roster between them and they are responsible for tracking the progress of our athletes on a weekly basis. During the Spring Semester, they arrange study tables for those who are in academic trouble. My hope is that, over time, they will be given the ability to schedule our students for classes. Several are in classes that they do not belong in...I have battled that for years. The reason I chose English & Math is because they also provide some SAT Prep study tables in the spring to help our players in preparation for the upcoming tests. Weekly is ok for us, I have not heard any complaints. We are teaching kids accountability and our teachers appreciate us keeping a constant eye on our athletes which is helping improve behavior within the classroom.

I do it. I look I online at my players grades weekly. Through our online attendance/grades site I get the discipline alerts sent to me too. Teachers know they can email or tell me if there are problems too.
I send players emails and texts about their grades if I do t see them that day. No extra paperwork.
