I was just wondering what coaches felt were the core competencies or skills players need to develop to do their jobs for each position. How long a list would you create to answer this question. Obviously this depends on the scheme used (ie. Calande is not going to list the Kick Slide as a core competency in his dbl wing offense for guards.)
Next, once you list these skills, what drills do you have to develop them in the individual time.
Just something to get the football brains working on practical info.

Interesting question.....been trying to post something for 2 days now and got side-tracked....leak in the bathroom....dang phone ringing....angry wife= from being on the computer too long...but....having spent the majority of my football coaching time at the youth level....my list of important core skills would be fairly short and generic...and not very position specific. This would be an example.... Stance = team = everyone learned a) good hitting position and b) 3 pt. stance, then how to best fire out effectively....other types of stances "were" position specific.... Blocking = everyone on the team learned to block effectively = here's the progression.... base 1 on 1 drive block, (taught both over the years-crowther progression and hands), then....lets cooperate with our buddy....co-op/combo block....then, we might have to block downfield or in space......open field blocking.... Drills were part speed fit/form and lots of small group live stuff! Tackling = everyone on the team learned to tackle safely = I like chest to chest style(for safety reasons)...so only taught that.... in close qtrs. and open field..... Drills were about the same as blocking....part speed fit/form....live one on one or small groups....inside(close qtrs.) drills were fairly simple, everyone could do that......open field tackling, using leverage, was more difficult to learn. Ball handling skills = team = everyone learned how to hold the ball.....give and take a hand-off....run with good posture.....switch arms.....read/cut off a block....and contact a defender...(i.e.protect/cover up the ball.... hitnspin....stiff arm...etc)....Drills for this stuff were usually a fairly continuous moving line/lines, with cones/bags/dummys etc...later progressing to live small group drills.....Defensive specific skills = team = everyone learned to back pedal....turn and run out of a pedal.....plant and break on the ball.....slide...carioca...seat roll....a couple escape/block shedding moves....just anything we could do fairly easily and keep the group moving.....Basic pass routes = team = everyone learned and ran these....centers and QB'S also got good reps during this......about the only position specific skills we worked on.....would be center/qb exchange - under center and gun snaps.....very basic QB mechanics(mostly cause I'm ignorant, lol).....kicking/punting.....maybe some of the tougher to learn defensive techs....9 tech and secondary rotation for run support kinda come to mind.....but....we could put "most" any kid, anywhere on the field....and he could do a "decent" job, using the basic skills he learned..... On the other hand.....at some point.....for "most" players....to be able to compete(do their job)......this versatility must give way and the training and focus, become more position specific
