How many of y'all totally lose your guys to other sports? We have quite a few guys playing baseball and the baseball coach wants them right now. We are at a small school and that would mean probably having only about 10-12 guys in offseason. The baseball coach says they will be lifting and conditioning in addition to their baseball practice, but it just worries me to lose so many guys. What are y'alls thoughts?

I encourage my kids to play other sports. First off I think it gets them away from the grind of football for a while, but still keeps them active and competitive. Second we lift in the mornings during the off season so this doesn't affect any practice time with other sports. I have almost all my kids who play other sports still come in the weight room in the morning.I had a problem with our basketball coach not wanting kids to play other sports in high school and came across this quote from Greg Shiano and Butch Davis about recruiting football players. "We were looking for athletic, speed guys who loved football," explains Schiano. That was a directive from Davis, who got his start coaching multiple sports and always looked for players who could excel at basketball, track, wrestling, whatever. "When you coach a lot of different sports," Davis says, "you start to appreciate a lot of skills and how they work together." He would assemble his staff in a film room, look at high school games, and wait for preps to "jump off the screen." I think playing multiple sports helps in the recruiting process as well.

We lose almost all of our kids as soon as the season is over, our economy is great so kids are making $12-15 an hour working 16-32 hours a week plus full class schedule. If I can get 5 in the weight room a day I call it a win!

As long as they're playing other sports it's fine. I only have about 10 in here lifting right now. Another 10 or so are playing basketball at various levels frosh-varsity. Some play baseball, and others have to work.
We go afternoons here, but I prefer mornings. Less of an excuse.

You gotta share, almost no way around it. We are lucky that we have most of our kids in wt. lifting class during the day. We dont make multi sport kids lift on game days because we dont lift on game days. Thinking about changing that next year we will see. It stinks cause we play 2 basketball games and 1-2 wrestling matches a week right now. So some Tuesdays and Fridays almost half of our 1st period class is sitting out. Baseball is not a real big problem for us as we dont have many kids who play baseball as well.

That way, work is still being done, motor patterns are still being worked and no one is going to overwork themselves and perform a poor performance on the overzealous weight coach.

Coach-that is a good idea. And thats what I'd do, but I'm not the HC so not my call. This year he said they dont have to lift bc we didnt lift on game day. Now we wont stop them from lifting if they want to. But thinking of doing something like this next year on our game days so they do the same later on.

At both schools I have worked at we encourage the kids to play other sports. We also encourage the other athletes (not football players) to use the weight room and work out. I know at my previous school the best program we had on campus was girls basketball and they were in the weight room second only to football. Some of these baseball and basketball coaches have such a negative feeling towards the weight room and it shows.

We play in the largest division in our state, but we don't have enough athletes in the building for each of them to specialize, we have to share. We are about 5 years into having lifting scheduled into our school day and it has made a big difference. We lift on gameday no matter what sport it is. I am the head baseball coach(varsity DC for football) and we lift Monday through Thursday during the season, you miss weights you don't play and that includes my starting pitchers. If a multi-sport athlete is taking gamedays off from lifting that is going to add up to a significant number of days missed.

I heard from college kinesiologist (strength and conditioning coach with PhD) that every athlete can lift every day. Even a basketball player will have his shot back in just 5 minutes of shooting after lifting hard. The only position that showed an adverse effect was a baseball pitcher on the day of a start.

NBA players lift on game day At one point the Southern Utah coach had squat racks on the sideline, and they got in a heavy squat during their pregame for home games. I don't know if they're still doing this or not, but he believed it added to their explosiveness in the game.

I've never had much of a problem with this. In 23 years of coaching I have always encouraged athletes to compete in more than one sport. Also, on every coaching staff I've been on the head coach of the other sports shared the same philosophy of wanting the athletes to compete in other sports.
Right now, those athletes not in basketball are going through track workouts. Every athlete runs track, just like everyone lifts. You cant get faster unless you work on the drills and techniques and actual running. For those that play baseball it gets them in shape for their season that will start. For football it makes them a better overall athlete and prepares us for the Summer workouts. Once basketball is over they will join us. Workouts are not just running, we are teaching starts, pulling sleds, working flexibility, and teaching proper running form.
Ultimately, it is up to the Athletic Director to get the head coaches on the same page.

Most college coaches are looking for multi-sport athletes, not football players. I had a college coach once say, "If I get a football player he can play 1 position. If I get an athlete he can play several." And of course, the USOC Report: www.getsportiq.com/2014/12/5410/

If one of our kids is in a varsity sport they have the option to switch to that athletic period while in season. If you make a sub-varsity team in another sport you stay with us during our off season period, but get the day off on game days. Once the season is done you go back to our offseason period.
