What does your banquet look like? Do you have pre planned speeches for all kids? How long? etc?

We want to keep ours to 2 hours, sometimes extends a little bit because of highlight video at the end.
First 30 Minutes: - Opening by HC: Welcomes everyone, talks about the season and academic achievement, thanks all admin and volunteers for their efforts - Head Coach of incoming freshman talks (8th graders): We invite the youth team in our area to our banquet, so they get a little bit excited about becoming HS players. HC talks a little bit about the season. - Door Prize #1 - Principal and Athletic Director Speeches - Volunteer Recognition - Flowers and Gifts given to parents/volunteers who spend plenty of time - Platinum and Gold Sponsor Recognition - Plaques/Gifts given to those sponsors - Door Prize #2
Next 30 minutes: - Dinner Served by Banquet Hall, Senior class cuts and hands out cake to everyone
Next 30 Minutes: - Senior Class Recognized - Conference/Provincial All-Stars recognized - JV Head Coach Speech then 5 Awards - Varsity Awards
Last 30 Minutes: - Closing Remarks by Head Coach - Final Door Prize - JV Highlights (6 minutes) then Varsity Highlights (12 minutes)

Banquet is in the ballroom of a local hotel (within 1-2 weeks after conclusion of season). Seniors sit at head table with head coach. Other players sit together at tables. Parents, friends, and coaches' wives/girlfriends attend. Head coach is MC, intoduces every senior and says something about him. All varsity, JV and soph award winners are introduced(nothing said about them). We also have special team awards which are given at the banquet (assistant do this). While everyone is eating a season highlight video is shown. Banquet is usually no more than 3 hours. It is a very nice affair.

Am I the only one that can't stand banquets? They are always too long and you either wind up giving out awards and talking about kids that you either think "dang I wish we had that kid one more year" and get terrified about what you have left in off season, or "finally, that kid is gone"

Our is odd because it is January but it is the tradition here i do not mind it because it is far enough removed that everyone can relax from the emotion of whatever our last game was and how much we might hate some kids
we do it at our town's histroical society/sports hall of fame
this city has had a lot of great individual players, some NFL guys, and an NFL HOFer so the local legends hall of fame is pretty cool looking
upstairs is a big open room, downstairs the museum/HOF aspect
we meet upstairs, HC gives a brief speech we serve pasta and salad everyone goes through the line to get their plate and then we all sit down and eat while watching a highlight tape i make
after we eat coaches go up and give awards. We just give short speeches 30-60 seconds about the kid we are presenting the award to and he comes up, shake hands, maybe take a pic and then on to the next
we give A TON of awards, i hate it we have the usual O, D, and overall MVP but then we have about a dozen other awards we are required to give out we have these "legends" awards that are named after alumni Best DL, OL, RB, blah blah blah those ones are big trophies that stay there at that location, the player's name gets engraved on it with the year
just sucks, because we HAVE to give them out and some years no one deserves it but we have to give it to someone
we usually give out 2 coaches awards, for those kids who just bust their butt, might not be our best players but they give everything their body has in it, the kind of kids you enjoy coaching

I shoot for our banquet to be done in about an hour and a half. We simply do a dessert banquet. As everyone enters our cafetorium, I have our highlight film playing. We immediately begin with desserts. Then, I begin by thanking admin., BOE, Principal, AD, etc. I will introduce our participation recipients (with a very brief discussion of a group as a whole - funny stuff, improvment, etc.), then the 1st year letter-winners (again, brief info.), 2nd year letter-winners, 3rd year letter-winners, etc (all with brief info.). We will then recognize all-conference, district, state winners, and end with our "special" awards (about 6 is total - but ONLY if we feel we have athletes that are deserving). Usually wrapped up in less than an hour and a half. (depending on team size).
