Coaches, I am looking for any quotes or sayings you use or have come across to hang in our locker room in regard to making good decisions or related to decision making.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

"in any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing. The next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing."
"I care not of what others think of what I do, but I care very much about what I think of what I do. That is Character!"
"Life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it."
-not all of these fit exactly but I think they are close to what you are looking for.

Might be a little long to hang up but "Be where you're 'sposed to be, when you're 'sposed to be there, doing what you're 'sposed to be doing"

All great stuff. Thanks. We want to try and develop positive decision-making in school, athletics, and community as all of you do.
Looking for something that truly grabs ahold of all 3.

Very simple and straight to the point, I put it up in my classroom and always refer to it

We have started using Habitudes and have the posters up in the locker room. When we have had issues we have stopped where we were and pointed out a poster and had a 5 minute debriefing. Have to set a base knowledge before it means anything to the athletes.

Yes. Bad decisions mean ineligible players and lack of commitment.

I do not know if it applies to this or not but when coaches have a manual of rules to give out at beginning of season for kids to follow I think it is crazy. You are just setting yourself up for problems. Too many damn rules to break and have to punish. I had one rule that applied to everything but gave me loopholes. "Don't embarrass the program." Guys in their 30's still talk about that.......

Every situation is different and parents today are looking for anything in many places to come after if Johnny isn't getting his way or the parent isn't.

Lawyers would look at that rule and laugh. What is the definition of "embarrass"? What is "the program"? Now-a-days this won't CYA. I remember when I was in HS, we didn't even have a Rule List. We just did what the coach said...period. No questions asked. If mom or dad asked how practice went, the only response was "good." Now its, "coach is mean to me." My vote is for DCOHIO's suggestion. Quit whining, and be a man!

'Would you do it if Momma was watching?' 'All decisions have consequences' Sadly, Today I ask kids the same thing in the classroom as I try to develop good character. I am shocked but not surprised when kids tell me things. For example, Why do you scream the F-bomb in school? Do you say that at home in front of your mother? Student "Yes. She doesn't care. This is from a 2 9th grade students one male and one female. If I would have said this or any of my peers that would have gotten lit up by both parents and probably another parent if you spoke poorly in front of them. Sports is the great equalizer when you can develop a strong character education program with good mentors as coaches and support from parents and the community. When you do not the battle because even more intense.

When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. When I became a man I put away childish, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up. CS Lewis

Quit whining, and be a man! The "Program" was the football program, the school, the community, their family, etc. They were constantly told what falls under this. There were many unspoken rules that fell under this "code". They knew that if they did not follow they would be kicked out of the circle so to speak. It wasn't just a rule put on the wall and then left alone... It was spoken and preached about to them daily. They knew it in depth. As far as administration goes, my principle loved it. We had coaches of other sports that had freaking encyclopedias of rules for the kids to follow, where to sit on the bus, etc. Kids couldn't keep up with it all. With me, they knew what to expect. And this was still working last year...... Rooster
